Now if he would have turned down the course and promotion to start with because he wanted to run for congress I would have no problem with his actions. Once you are eligible to retire nobody should be criticized for doing so but this guy reenlisted and accepted a position knowing they were going to deploy and then said "ah nope not me".

Yeah he was an E-8 and on promotion list to E-9. Deployments are planned months in advance he absolutely knew roughly when they were going to deploy. And as you said if he intended to retire then don’t head down that E-9 path knowing you aren’t going to complete it and get rolled back.

How quickly do retirements process?

What year was the deployment? In the mid 2000s, NG deployments weren't always planned that far in advance.

I don’t have any current basis for that only the people in my family than served and that was decades ago.

But again the iffy part for me is as hog pointed out he accepted conditional promotion to E-9 contingent on him completing the CSM course. So he either knew way ahead of time and bailed anyway after taking the contingent promotion or left last minute when deployment orders came thru. I don’t think either is a very good look.

Not a mark on his service at all. How he left is an obvious head scratcher to me anyway.

I thought there were people upset with him because he supposedly kept saying and had his website list that he was a CSM even after he retired, but he never achieved that rank?

had to Google to be sure it was 2005. I cannot think of anything at that time in my memory that would mandate a rapid call up of NG units. And due to their part time service status unless it’s urgent it’s gonna be telegraphed way in advance to try and keep deployment hardships to a minimum.

The Army National Guard, which he was in, likes to do training for a couple months before they even deploy. At least certain career fields that is.

He had conditional appt to E-9 contingent to completion of the command sergeant major mandatory course. He started it but did not complete so his final rank for his DD-214 was rolled back. It isn’t disciplinary it’s just administrative for final benefits determination.

I saw it. Co-workers, a couple who were officers, not knowing before 2-3 weeks of deployment. One guy was a Lt. Colonel

Early 2000s and they were getting a year or more warning orders of deployment back then. So they knew at least a year in advance before they would even be activated to start pre-deployment training which back then lasted about a year before they actually deployed.

What type of unit was it? That matters for NG. Walz was infantry and artillery through out his career (found that on the year Google) so what is pressing for those MOS. While I’m sure what you’re saying is true I also know a huge number of reservists and NG (I retired from a defense / aerospace company and a huge number of people are reserves or NG) and your example would be the exception and not the rule from my own anecdotal info unless the unit had a very special role I’d guess.

And knowing that telegraphing and knowing his political goals had he just not accepted the contingent promotion and separated there wouldn’t have been any question. It’s just an obvious head scratcher on why do that. 🤷‍♂️

That must have been the case. We were having to do some of that during that spell, plus the presence of Dyncorp being unreliable at times made it worse. We facked up believing they could provide adequate security

FWIW: WaPo reporter says it was about 60 days between notice of possible deployment and his last day. Supposedly takes about 90 days to process a retirement and 60 days would be fast. Could see them expediting for somebody running for Congress, I guess.

Have not read the section on the E-9 appointment issue, but it wasn’t discussed in the context of his departure.

Honest question to which i don’t know the answer. If you have already put in for retirement and are being processed; is there not a process to halt or reverse that once you find out your unit needs you (like for example a deployment)?

I found an AP article that laid out the timeline. He retired May of 2005 after accepting the conditional promotion. His unit was aware of coming deployment orders which showed up in August 2005. The unit deployed in 2006. So again telegraphed way in advance.

The clear interpretation is he wanted to make E-9 I mean why not. He could see way in advance his unit was going to deploy after taking the conditional promotion and put his papers in and was administratively rolled back. He also intended to run for Congress (guessing this would have been a 2006 campaign) so again why take the promotion? 🤷‍♂️

I found an AP article that says the orders to the unit showed up in August 2005 for a 2006 deployment and he put his paperwork in in May 2005.
