Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Didn't you say your boss is your friend?

Yep. He is co-owner of the company with his business partner. My friend handles the field operation and his partner handles everything in the office from bidding jobs to billing, payroll etc. My friend definitely has the easier job by orders of magnitude and at this point spends about 1/3 to 1/2 the year on vacation whether in state or out of town/country. I have never asked my friend about the vacation pay...have never asked either of them for a raise either. I have only asked for a raise once actually in 30 years. The 1st guy I started framing houses for in summer 1993 for $6 an hour. I know that has cost me lost income over the years. Its just something I always figured that I make it obvious that I work my ass off...production is unmistakable in construction...and have always been the guy who wanted to work late and weekends. Its obvious when a mason lays 1000-1200 brick everyday and the other guys are laying 700 or 800. If I ever felt woefully underpaid or underappreciated I would have gone to work for someone else...I have always felt that if I am a top producer and making my employer good money that I shouldn't have to ask for a raise. They never had to ask me to give 100% or set the pace everyday for the entire crew. I learned decades ago that strangely most people think they are hard workers when in fact 20% of the people do about 80% of the work. Fortunately construction is great at separating the real producers from the rest. Both in terms of quality and output. Everyone around you can tell how much you get done everyday...theres no "hiding in the office, then take credit for coworkers efforts" type crap like sometimes happens in office environments from what I understand. There are definitely downsides to construction though...i have had 2 back surgeries and while I don't ever build with my hands anymore unless i just get bored and want to, I still freeze all winter and fry all summer. Dont have insurance for my family either. Only medical on myself paid by the company. I should probably ask my boss about the vacation pay. I love my job though honestly. My boss is great to me. He might come by my job once every month or 2 for a few minutes...never, ever calls me about work. When we talk we are laughing and cutting up and never even discuss work unless theres a problem on my job that I want to bring to his attention or a change order so big that I dont feel comfortable pricing myself...and both of those are very rare maybe once a year type things. They leave me alone and let me knock out these apartment complexes and almost never question what I do. I took the other day off...I didnt have to call and tell anyone. My boss always says " If your jobs good, we are good. Havent heard a peep." I have been offered the same position for 2 other competitors and both offered me a little more money than i am making but I just dont think anyone else would ever treat me as good as these guys do. I really enjoy the freedom and trust they allow me. Maybe I am an idiot and could have earned substantially more money over time if I was willing to take more risks. I am thankful for the job security though for 14+ years and my boss had told me that if 08 happens again and he has to lay everyone off that I will be last man standing because we are loyal to eachother. I am really thankful for that. 08 scarred me man because I saw a lot of good men like Slice and my FIL who were self employed/owners lose literally everything they had. Many guys that were quite good at their trades never recovered.

^^^ for somebody with cash and freetime, that napkin holder might be an opportunity. The guy that builds and installs all the steel stairs on the project I am finishing up went to piss one night in the bar where he shoots pool in his league. He noticed there was no place to set your beer down while pissing...and you never, ever leave your drink unattended in a bar (to avoid getting drugged etc)

Long story short he brought his tape measure in there and pulled some measurements. Made a simple plastic prototype for a drink holder that clips onto the top part of a urinal and holds your beer etc up above the fixture away from nasty stuff. Patented his design (said it was cheap) then sold it to 1 of the urinal manufacturers (Kohler i think) for several million dollars. I asked him if they were making and selling his product, he said that he wasnt sure but one of their primary concerns was just owning his patent so their rivals did not. Kept their rivals from being able to market an accessory or design they didnt have a counter for.

If those raggedy napkin holders that have been around forever are still the only type available then thats probably an opportunity for innovation. That crappy design has been causing folks problems since at least 40 years ago when i was a kid. 3D printers are a game changer too. Building and testing models for a design has never been close to this easy...

Yes. Especially if its Dink.

Seriously though....yes. 96% chance they are a psychotic serial killer, hallucinating, or schizophrenic and brought their own company. Hahaha. Jk man if yall go camping solo thats cool. Not something I would do unless I was dying or something and just wanted to be alone.

I do it all the time. It's probably different for me because between work and personal relationships, I'm flooded with human interaction and general sensory overload.

I go out there and all I have to hear is deer ****ing each other.

I know pimpin thats why I mentioned you. I completely understand your desire to seek out solitude. Bet I would do the same in your shoes. I am still smiling bout your festival girl lmao. To be young again...my bodycount definitely includes some questionable strange pulled out the club at 2am back in the day. Duty as a wingman sometimes calls for sacrifice for the common good man. There are several whose name I dont know now, and not sure if i knew or cared then to be honest. Butterfaces need lovin too at 2am when your boy has her hot friend hemmed up...alcohol: making poor decisions for all of recorded history 😄

haven't seen any that attach to the urinals, but definitely see plenty of drink trays in bathrooms now a days. sometimes they are just shelfs mounted to the wall. other times they are actual cup holders, even seen a couple fancy ones that the breweries glasses *click* into.

It’s weird and hard to question a coach that has had the success for us that Vitello has, but ... I have no clue as to his pitching strategy this game, so far it’s been abysmal.

Some little touches which I think are the right way to do a reno. Cost a bit more, but worth it to me.

Original brick has a "wire cut" finish. I think it's ugly but I wanted it to match where we converted a door or closed a window opening. So, found a supplier who had the closest I could find. Had to purchase a cube. No idea what we will do with the leftover.

Original cinder block...I think it's called a masonry block unit now (MBU???) but they had these single pane windows in the opening. To a crawl space. I have no idea why. So, we closed them up and put a finish coat of mortar to match existing finish. Brick work is expensive. But experienced labor is worth it.

Probably my favorite little extra touch. Original house had these decorative touches at the corners. Some had been lost since it was built. So, my guy took one of the two remaining and made a pattern. Reinstalled at the corners and carried the theme on the porch overhangs.

House will be painted a pine-ish green. White trim. Going to stain the post and maybe the gable to match. I'm guessing white around the edge of the gable. Only problem is cant do the gable on the side porch or the gables of the house the same. So kinda torn as to the right way to go.

Suggestions?

Going to put trex-type deck boards over the concrete porches. Band it with same product. McRib chose a tan with lots of other small colors added in. Called coastal something.
