Recruiting Football Talk VII

UT should have punted on hiring a HC the year Kiffin left.

Dooley was a political hire, because he was AD at LA Tech and was essentially the only one available that late in the game. The AD at the time was trying to save his job.

The fans, players, and administration craved stability and they gave Dooley 3 years for the optics. He never got a real shot, but coached some prolific offense.

Butch Jones was hired after a national search that started prior to Dooley's loss to Kentucky. He covered up sexual assault, publicly humiliated his players, was the target of a title IX lawsuit, got rid of the S&C program, and played players out of their natural position all the time.

There's a reason Dooley keeps getting jobs and Butch will likely never touch a P4 job again.
So you don’t accept the NOT GUILTY verdict for AJ Johnson?

He did nothing worse than every coach before him. He just got caught, then lied. He was the best coach I can remember before Barnes. He didnt just get us back to relevancy, he had us at an elite level, fast. He was a great showman here. Fans loved him. Most fans defended his lies to the NCAA. . .

I think what people are really bitching about is when people talk highly of Pearl, but then drag Barnes on the other hand or act like Pearl is better. . . when Barnes has been a step or 2 above what Pearl did across the board. People should acknowledge and appreciate Pearl, but also realize Barnes is truly a legendary coach, a molder of men, and a man of God. If not for Danny White's wizardry in hiring coaches, I'd fully believe we'll never seesanother coach as elite as Barnes in our lifetime.

Pearl basically showed the admin and university heads that we could be a football school AND basketball could benefit and succeed with more support. It paved the way for us to land a guy like Rick Barnes, but I also think if Jerry Green had gotten the same level or support that Pearl and Barnes did people would have been talking about him in the same sort of way.

Maybe it was just a really good era for in-state talent or something... but to land Tony Harris (Memphis, TN), Vincent Yarbrough (Cleveland, TN), Ron Slay (Nashville, TN), & Marcus Haislip (Lewisburg, TN) is pretty crazy considering how bad the program was after Houston & O'Neill eras. Green shows up and has 4 straight 20 win seasons and 4 straight NCAA appearances. No coach (not even Pearl) has won at the same % he did since. For Buzz Peterson to inherit a team with Yarbrough, Haislip, Slay, & Higgins and then win just 15 games is the biggest fumble of any coach in UT history in my opinion (of any sport too).

Thank you! You couldn't of said that better

I was never bought in to Donnie Tyndall, I always felt like that was the "cheap option until we see if the Pearl situation is going to hurt us" and Donnie helped us out a ton by having some serious skeletons that we used to fire him with cause.

I think Hart knew, but he also knew he could use that as a free pass for the hire after the Pearl violations.
I'd rather lose than win and not be able to feel good about it. If you have to compromise your integrity to win then it is not worth it. Don't get me wrong, I want to win more than anyone and I am not opposed to bending the rules within the game but winning by a rigged outcome or playing by different rules then I would rather lose.
In short, I'd rather lose than win like Alabubba does a lot of the time, when the fix is on.

I would probably say Dooley too but I don't know if it's that big a gap back to Butch. Maybe I just couldn't stand Butch and that clouds my judgement a little, but he did blow us up in record time. That guy was a fraud.
I break it down to record and recruiting. Neither could build anything sustainable, but one couldn’t win the only bowl game he made and the other won all three. One inherited the framework of his best recruiting class and descended thereafter. The other went on a run of landing NAMES. Development and scheme is a good wrestling match between the two.

I agree with all of that and I will say that I had some hope after 2015 that we may turn a corner and get back to where we were under Fulmer somewhat.......I never had any hope with Dooley minus the NC state game. Man, thinking back, they were both awful, but Butch gave us more good memories than Dooley by far.

Pearl was here only 6 years so you can only compare that time frame…. Pearl brought us an Elite Eight which is the goal to me….. I really think that Barne’s team might be able to get it done this year…. I’m ready for March Madness to start. LFG!!!

Poor Providence what could've been if they could've kept one of their great coaches.
Rick Barnes or Rick Pitino..

Kim English is just at Providence until the Deacon decides to hang it up..
I am afraid English ends up at Missouri before Barnes hangs it up. Missouri will likely move on from their coach this year or next.

I'm not talking about only what they did here. Barnes is a few steps ahead overall, on & off the court. Pearl may get there, but it'll be hard. Not many people can achieve what Barnes has in a lot of different areas of life and as consistently for so many years.

Pearl didn’t show them anything….. we had idiots running UT that lucked into any positive moment that we had…… Getting Randy Boyd and Plowman is what helped us become the University that we are today…. It feels so good to have the best administration in the country.
