Dooley is the worst hire in UT history. I’m always amazed at how people act like Butch is the poster child for bad coaching. Butch was bad, but Dooley was a disaster. If we’d hired Butch in 2011, we never sink as low as we did. Still wasn’t the right guy, but Dooley shouldn’t coach a high school team.
UT should have punted on hiring a HC the year Kiffin left.

Dooley was a political hire, because he was AD at LA Tech and was essentially the only one available that late in the game. The AD at the time was trying to save his job.

The fans, players, and administration craved stability and they gave Dooley 3 years for the optics. He never got a real shot, but coached some prolific offense.

Butch Jones was hired after a national search that started prior to Dooley's loss to Kentucky. He covered up sexual assault, publicly humiliated his players, was the target of a title IX lawsuit, got rid of the S&C program, and played players out of their natural position all the time.

There's a reason Dooley keeps getting jobs and Butch will likely never touch a P4 job again.

Maybe a unpopular take but I love conference tournaments. They start the chaos early, tournaments give the APSU team that was 4th in conference a chance to make it into the Big Dance.

Of course they are about the cash but also gives teams hope.
Good points and bad points. It seemed to help BaseVols last year to get an early elimination from SEC tourney and some rest before the NCAA tourney. And wound up in Omaha.

He hadn’t made it out of the 2nd round in 7 years…. 3 of his last 4 years…. He was below .500 in conference…. He has been much better here than he was toward the end of his Texas career… We got very lucky to have gotten him. It felt good not having to tell myself into a coach like I did when we hired Tyndall… I watched youtube videos of him and couldn’t believe that was the guy that we hired.
No one made you talk yourself into Tyndall — you did that to yourself 😂

Dooley hasn’t gotten a single HC job since he left UT and Butch has. Weird, conveniently worded, last sentence.

I’ll take the guy who won 9 games 2x, beat Florida, beat Georgia, beat VT, and won a few bowl games over the guy who never had a record above .500. And it’s not close.

I think a lot of UT fans give Dooley more grace because he said mama and britches. But he was a lazy ass recruiter who let the roster slip into oblivion. Butch at least worked.

God bless you @Devo182 everything you just said has always always been everything I was ever trying to say..im totally ok with people having complete displeasure with Bruce over him lying and putting the university in jeopardy. it’s a fair judgement but when you completely discredit his achievements here that’s when I have a major issue especially when you can’t give facts..

Bruce brought fans back to an arena that was always empty because of buzz.half of that area was blacked out with curtains to make it look full capacity..the student section was nothing like it is today and the arena itself was a ghost town..
I don't dislike him because of his firing, I could never stand him. I might catch heck, but I am not a win at any cost person, I like to win the right way. Pearl is a personal injury lawyer who coaches basketball. I may be wrong but that is how I see it.

What happened to the 'S curve', where 1 would play 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5, if they got that far? Do they not use that anymore?

Shows how much attention I've paid to these details in the past.

They don’t use an exact S-Curve because of geography and rematch/same conference considerations. Like if Arizona is the last 1 and we’re the top 2 they wouldn’t send us to the west region and then that blows up the S-Curve.

I feel like being a head coach here in basketball the main goal should be to reach 65% winning percentage each season.

Barnes has done it 6 of his 9 seasons, the 17-14 season when he was replacing Grant, Admiral, Bone, & Kyle where Turner then got hurt being the only sub 65% season after the first 2 years of rebuilding.

Next thing is making the NCAA tournament (which if you win 65% you got a pretty good chance of making) so he's done it 5 times and will do it for his 6th time this year.

After that I feel like you're kind of playing with house money, if you win the regular season conference, SECT or make a deep March run those are just extras. I'd like for us to get to a level where we're constantly in the conversation to win the league (regular season or tournament) and Barnes these last 3 years has gotten us there so bonus points for him.

Barnes also needs just 7 wins to surpass DeVoe for 2nd all time. Pretty special coach we've had.

Also something I didn't realize...the 3 regular season titles Pearl won here aren't quite the same as what Barnes has done. The conference was giving out an East/West until the 2012-13 season, so Pearl's 3 regular season titles are really just 1 outright regular season title (where he had the best overall record in the SEC in 2007-08).

Every other season Pearl "won" the regular season we didn't have the best record. 2005-06 we won the East at 12-4, but LSU was 14-2 in the West. In 2008-09 we shared the East with South Carolina finishing 10-6 and LSU was 13-3 in the West (also Auburn was 10-6 that year as well)

I remember at the time when Texas ran Barnes off and we got him that I couldn't believe it and I wondered if the Texas AD had just come off a meth bender bankrolled by Dave Hart. I mean we went from My Cousin Vinny to Rick Barnes, unbelievable.
I was on “vacation” from this board and wandered over to ShaggyBevo to thank them for firing him so he could stabilize our program after an awful stretch. All open…no trolling. They didn’t take it well. Kept listing the litany of grievances against him. Recruited well and won consistently during the season with no disciplinary issues BUT ONLY ONE FINAL FOUR. I said “yeah…sounds awful. We’re in a bad way, thanks again.” They then promised me that after a few seasons of meh, I would revisit their board (by then doubtlessly celebrating multiple Final Fours and cashing in on at least one with Shaka Smart) and acknowledge how terrible he was. He’s not and their board went bye bye. 😢

He did nothing worse than every coach before him. He just got caught, then lied. He was the best coach I can remember before Barnes. He didnt just get us back to relevancy, he had us at an elite level, fast. He was a great showman here. Fans loved him. Most fans defended his lies to the NCAA. . .

I think what people are really bitching about is when people talk highly of Pearl, but then drag Barnes on the other hand or act like Pearl is better. . . when Barnes has been a step or 2 above what Pearl did across the board. People should acknowledge and appreciate Pearl, but also realize Barnes is truly a legendary coach, a molder of men, and a man of God. If not for Danny White's wizardry in hiring coaches, I'd fully believe we'll never seesanother coach as elite as Barnes in our lifetime.

Just win,Baby…… that’s my motto…. Al Davis taught me well.

I was never bought in to Donnie Tyndall, I always felt like that was the "cheap option until we see if the Pearl situation is going to hurt us" and Donnie helped us out a ton by having some serious skeletons that we used to fire him with cause.

I think Hart knew, but he also knew he could use that as a free pass for the hire after the Pearl violations.

Tyndall was a bad hire. He was not going to work out.

He did end up recruiting some quality players though. Tariq Owens was a starter for Texas Tech's national finals team. Kevin Punter. Mostella.

Admiral signed with him in the 2015 class.

Tyndall has currently won 4 straight conference tournaments at the JUCO he's been at in Florida.
I think Tyndall can coach…. Never would have been the guy that i would have chose to run our program.
