Ever notice how with Luther the D's faults are attributed to their nobility of character, never a lack of good policy or leadership???Carter's issue was he refused to dumb down himself and his policies in order to improve the public's opinion of him.
Sacrificing the long term for short term popularity is how we've gotten where we are. People can be idiots.
Amazingly, and to the great disappointment of many, there was no civil war during his presidency, He certainly did all he could to bring us closer than we have been in 150 years,
