The Atlanta Braves

Maybe it’s because I’m not a rich guy but why does John Fisher own the A’s? He obviously doesn’t do it for fame because he’s done like two interviews since he bought the team almost 20 years ago. He doesn’t do it to win of course. He is universally hated by a whole region. He obviously can’t do this relocation thing right. He doesn’t need the money even though he turns a solid profit and would make more selling the team. Why even have a baseball team? What’s the point? He’s worth 2.5B, he needs the $40M profit a year that bad???
If I was king for a day all pro leagues would require relegation or you lose your anti-trust exemption.

Probably just a capital preservation/diversification strategy. The team is close to 50% of his net worth, and it isn't going to go down in value no matter how awful the team is. He'd probably rather have it in an MLB team than public or private equity, bonds, cash, etc. It's also a status symbol in the circles he (I'm assuming) runs around in.

Still can’t believe Mauer got in first ballot. I’m a big hall guy and I’m more rate based in my thinking but even with that a dude with 143 homers and less than 1,000 RBI’s and only caught 921 games is crazy.

I agree. But it just shows how truly rare it is to get sustained offense from a Catcher. When I think of Maurer, I think of a guy with an MVP and a nice career, then you pull up an all time WAR list and it sneaks up on you that he’s top 10 at his position.

He was an absolute monster in his prime and I’m fine with him in. But him getting in first ballot was insane to me. Meanwhile Andruw has just as good a case as Mauer and he can’t get in because his knee gave out but Mauer does because of concussions. And Andruw was a better role player
