Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

It's very frustrating. I understand some would skirt proper building practices, encroach on easements, etc. But it is demotivating for me because I am trying to upgrade a property and do it right. I am trying to make it safer by removing wall heaters, the fuse panel, and such.

I should have just had the work done quietly and asked for forgiveness if caught.
what needs to be permitted? Are you over the dollar limit? Most jurisdictions will let you do that stuff without a permit as its essentially maintenance. a permit should only kick in if you are doing work with a dollar amount over some percentage of the value of the property.

adding rooms, expanding, or adding "major" equipment would require permitting, but if its mostly replacement you should be fine.

good teams can come out of weak conferences. Clemson won it all twice despite coming out of the ACC.

like I said, I just want there to be a consistent standard. that is applied year after year. as it is it just seems like the committee is picking different favorites every year, and going back on what they said previously. that uncertainty is what bothers me.

Its kinda funny but this just reminds me this is why we went to the BCS computer system to remove all biases and keep a consistent standard.

Very true about dominant team in a weak conference, but there are likely some things that make it happen. One would be recruiting; the great team is going to have an upper hand when it comes to recruits in the conference footprint. Like it or not standings and rankings are all about wins and losses, and the giant isn't usually going to have a lot of trouble with the dwarfs. Having a difficult schedule with near peer teams often means everybody is pretty well battered by the end of a season - that means recruiting is even more important for depth, and a dominant team usually can rotate sooner and keep starters healthy. TN was pretty beat up halfway through the season, and it showed. That's hard to fix when competing with some very good and nearby conference teams year in and year out.

It just seems that teams like Clemson and tOSU in conferences without real parity have a better shot at winning records, and winning records are the most rewarded aspect in sports ... strength of schedule falsely gets pushed off to the side. Look at teams recently added; the SEC picked up OK and TX. They may have slumps from time to time, but those are traditionally teams at the top. The big10 picked up USC and UCLA - neither is in the top 25. They do add WA and OR later, and those are top teams for now. It'll be interesting to see how the geographic spread works out, but other than TV packages, not much of conference expansion makes any sense.

Unfortunately it's more than would be considered maintenance.
Exterior deck (must be permitted in my town)
replacing electrical panel and wiring.
replacing all interior plumbing lines to the main drain.
removing a load bearing section of wall.

I'm looking into an infrared camera to look for heat loss around the house. There are stand alone units and some that plug into a cellphone. Nice thing about the latter is you can snap a picture for reference. Does anybody have experience? I'm not thinking top of the line professional - just more in line with what a homeowner could use effectively.

just learned Hitch a Ride solo..80% there in pretty well mastering it. Some tough fast oarts but not too bad with all hammer ons and pull offs. At my speed limit though.
Considering Tom Sholz played it, thought I would see how he plays it. Absolutely dreadul..shockingly. Makes me wonder if he didnt record slowly and speed up as guitar is tuned half step high or cappoed.

He was an electrical engineer. Built a few sound devices.

this NIL stuff where kids go to the highest bidder and buying teams..just too professional now.
Is there something special about the game being played by "amateur" young men which is lost by them having agency over their name, image, and likeness? Serious question because I like to understand how people think about things.

Just dont like buying players. It doesnt buy school loyalty as exhibited by the transfer portal.
Kids make a commitment to a school and it diminishes that choice. Life lessons.

I want kids that want to be at a school because they want to be there, it is a dream, more pure. Of course I am being naive that it was ever pure. You even know about my father.

I am sure others on here could explain better than me.

Those days are long gone if they even ever existed. The NCAA and universities brought this upon themselves by being stubborn and sticking their head in the sand.

I don't miss those days at all (except being younger). I like being able to watch every game.

Now go yell at some kids to get off your lawn.

Yall ever have those moments when something completely random from your past just floods into your brain?

This morning I was drinking my coffee minding my own business and the ABC Wild World of Sports neurons fired off. Specifically, the music and the ski jump person spectacularly crashing at the end of the ramp and the voice over saying, "the agony of defeat".

Understood. I think you may have a romanticized view of the sport wrt to buying athletes. Has always been a part of it. Now, it is simply out in the open.

I like the new system. Coaches don't have loyalty. We don't even expect loyalty when a better offer comes along. Why should loyalty from the young men?

Not to mention scholarships are year to year. A player could be the most loyal and dedicated guy on the team yet have his scholarship yanked if he's not producing.

An excellent point.

...which is out of character for you. Who are you and what have you done with the real hog???
