Recruiting Football Talk VII

He, Mo Clipper, and Masai Reddick were all “projects” when we took them in the 2021 class. Unfortunately, seems like we might be going 0/3 with those guys. Kind of a byproduct of the situation we were in where he had to take what we could get with the NCAA cloud hanging over us.

100%…I will be surprised if any of them ever contribute. They were also recruited before we had our breakout season so we were also fishing in a different pond at that time. I think Warren and Seaton (if we get him) are automatically ahead of them.

Unpopular take: the extra “Covid year” has helped save us since we are in essence missing two classes from the coaching transition.

Maybe. I don’t know who they are. I like the idea of helping with NIL and other things that benefit student athletes but I just have a hard time giving money to people I’ve never met. I didn’t expect them to invite me to a banquet or anything because I haven’t donated much in the past but it would have been a nice gesture. A phone call would have sufficed. Instead they just pointed me to a link to their donation page. It may be different now but at the time UT had not endorsed them.
Help me understand your logic.

The staff and administration have publicly confirmed Spyre as Vol NIL partners. They've publicly asked the fans to support them, and confirmed the importance.

Have you met Netflix? Do you ask them to take you out to dinner before you give them your $20/month? Did you phone interview them?

Don't care that Dooley/Butch/Pruitt couldn't be mediocre. You should not be happy with 8 wins in year 4 of this program.
My word, dude! It’s fans like you that make our fan base one of the most toxic yet the greatest! Heupel took scraps his first year and won seven games, and we all know it was eight games. He wins 11 in his second year. He wins at least eight and maybe nine in his third year with an average at best quarterback, and blatantly biased officiating the entire year. You make up a group that are one of the reasons we can’t have nice things. I expect us to win more next year, but if we win eight games with a redshirt freshman at quarterback, and this new league that we are in, I certainly won’t be disappointed.

No idea but it’s sad that Flair is talking about spending so much money on alcohol like it’s some kind of good thing.

It was probably a “cool” thing to brag about back in the day…. He’s old and still hangs out to things that were thought as cool back when he was young. We all do it to some capacity, unfortunately one of his badge of honors is alcohol.

Flair is cutting a promo on Finebaum. He used to say those things back in the day when he was a heel. Talking about how rich he was made people hate him. Ric likes to party, of course, but it’s just part of the bit.

I agree that he took scraps his first year and had a good first year. He was really good last year. This year every team we played was equal or worse than last year except Mizzou. Mizzou is having a great year for them but no way they should've beat us like that. We weren't even competitive. No way we should've lost to a UF team that finished with 5 wins. Bama is not as good as last year and we were up 2 scores at half. We weren't even competitive in the second half. Georgia is what it is but would like to have seen us put up a fight past the first play. I didn't expect this team to win every game. I did expect this team to put up a fight in every game. Got beat by multiple TDs in every loss. You can be happy with that. Doesn't make sense to me but also doesn't bother me that you are a happily mediocre person

The strength of Spyre will be built on its breadth, not its depth.

Big donors are great, and we need them.

But real power is in 10,000 Vol fans giving $10 a month, not 10 deep pocket donors giving $10k a month. The former is scalable.
I get the sentiment and agree it would be better to be dependent on 10k donors vs 10, but not sure that’s true in reality in this arena.

I don’t know that we have more fans than other teams, and don’t think our twitter presence is a good barometer. So once the dust settles it’s perfectly possible that the best NIL firms will still be those who have the biggest donors.

Ultimately, I’m not sure it matters how much money we have anyways. Success is the best recruiter. Figure out how to win with what we have and we’ll bring in the best of the best. Money matters to the extent that we have enough to keep up with the top dogs, but don’t know that we have to have the most. That said, I could be totally wrong. UGA spends a million more on recruiting than any other team, and that seems to be working out for them.

In his first season went 9-4…at DUKE. Following Cutcliffe’s final 3-9 effort.

Winning 9 and 7 games at Duke is like winning 11 at most other places… not even considering Elko did it with his quarterback out quite a bit.. great hire for Aggies. He took over a disaster
David Cutcliffe won 10 at Duke. Dave Aranda won 12 at Baylor his first year.

Look, I think this is a perfectly reasonable hire for ATM, but I don’t think this is the guy that finally awakens the “sleeping giant” that the Josh Pate’s of the world seem to think their program is.
