I'm with @drvenner on this @InVOLuntary . It's kinda the most important defensive stat.

That's like saying win-loss record doesn't matter it's about how the team LOOKS that matters. PPG is important. Forcing FGs and TODs instead of TDs is important. There's two ways to do that, not allow a team to move the ball at all is preferred. The other way is bend-but-dont-break. Which can be aggravating at times and isn't as successful, but if it gets the job done and the defense is holding teams to low scoring outputs, then it's successful.

We get what, 12, 13 scholarships? It isnt like TN is a top 25, or 15 team here. This aint intramurals. This is top ten basketball.

I dont care if he's Mr Universe. I dont care if he's Andre the Giant. There is always a Hulkster, or a Rocky to your Thunderlips.

Real talk. Do I think this is all on two green horn, white boys? No. But, starting from opening whistle, we got manhandled. We were able to stifle Andre at times. Barnes' knew this was his roster. And lacking that presense in the middle; with lack of a bonafide scorer, is going to take its toll.

I think JJJ tried to match intensity. But outside of he and, Aidoo. Everyone seemed timid in the paint. They may be freshman, and they may be undersized. But, this is the roster our coach put together. So, they've got to play more phsyical, and bigger than they are.

I do think Barnes should be able to find a big, capable of asserting themselves in the paint. Get in there, and knock heads.

Tobe Awake does what you are asking. He's just undersized.

Not going to blame them for looking timid in the paint against Edey. It's just hard to deal with him.

I do think the one thing we are missing is a true physical big guy. We actually missed Uros against Edey. But you want a physical 6'10+ big on your team if you can get one.

Our defense has allowed 30pts only 3 times this season:
34 to #8 Alabama
36 to #10 Mizzou

2021 7 times:
41 to #13 Pitt
38 to Florida
31 to #11 Ole Miss

My interpretation is that in 2021 the defense was just not good enough from position to position. Our offense was capable of hanging with some teams though. In 2022 it was Jekyll and Hyde. Dominated some teams and got torched by others. 2 of the 4 games where we shut teams down were cupcakes (though Martin scored 24). The other two games were Vandy and Kentucky. This season I feel like we've played more consistently on defense. We've consistently held most teams below 20 points, but in the three games against the three best teams we've played we lost stamina and allowed >30. Those games we also got dominated in TOP and our offense couldn't do anything for significant portions of or the entire game. Any defense will start to collapse in those conditions.

I don't see our defense getting worse. We should be better next year even though we will replace some production: Beasley, Baron, Thomas, McCullough. If we make significant portal additions as rumored then we can be much better.

By numbers, the defense may not ever be much better in PPG but as long as our offense is working then that isn't a problem.
