Recruiting Football Talk VII

Problem is they don’t play the talent and lean on seniority and it’s bit them this year. 8-4 (hopefully) is a good season, but when you look at the losses all being blowouts it shows we are still far behind. And we aren’t recruiting difference makers on defense except the defensive line. DBs and LBs don’t look well coached and talent is lacking after three years. Love Heup and the offensive staff, I think a lot of woes go away once Milton is gone. But we need changes to the defensive staff or we will struggle again next year.

Why don’t we try staff consistency?

Break the mold.

Everything you wrote could explain essentially every season and staff Tennessee has had going back to the last few years of the Fulmer era. We’ve cycled through so many coaches, hired so many “super” coordinators that were busts, etc. and none of it has amounted to a hill of beans.

Why not just let this group, who has been wildly more successful than any recent group, run this thing a few more years and see how it all works out?

Frying two turkeys myself this year and I took the easy way out and just ordered a honeybaked ham this year instead of smoking one.
I fry a bird every year and make chocolate pie, wife and family take care of the rest. Kids clean up while I watch football and enjoy a glass of scotch.

It’s a good system.

I mean that makes sense, granted there's the other less desirable impact, that could ruin a day.

Honest question, do you see an activity that has that type of impact on your emotions, as healthy, or toxic?
If a losing bet ruins your day, you’re betting for the wrong reasons

I would say watching my favorite teams has more of a negative impact than winning/losing a bet

Idk how long; but tomorrow, yes, and that's just where we're thinnest, iirc. The frosh Estrella played some. I think we might be looking at some small ball tomorrow to try to wear out that Purdue center. Also it looks like, from people who follow basketball more than I do, that Edey is less effective if you keep his guards in check and make him their whole offense. We'll see.

I always like to read this: #1

Edney is good for a double-double each game. Just don’t let their guards get going.

If you do it for entertainment..it means nothing to me but if I bet more than 200 on something I get sick at the stomach when I lose...which has happened a few times...
Yeah biggest bet I’ve ever made was $50. $20 bets is more my range for the fun of it

I think it can be as simple as Missouri had a similar year this year to what we had last year. I don't think Missouri's situation is more sustainable than ours.

I think you look around the league and several programs have had 'a year' that makes you think wow... And then they crash back to earth.

I don't know how different yet we are from that, but relative to what we've been, we're ahead of that.

We're not close to UGA or Bama from a sustainability standpoint but I think we're ahead of some other programs.

Recruiting is actually very good... It's just not gonna show up in the rankings. I think this class is really good. That last class was really good. Need to better in the portal... Need ol and dbs. I'm anxious to see how a couple of these freshman do...

The sky isn't falling... It's just kinda 'there' lol. And heupel doesn't deserve to be fired tho I wouldn't totally object to a few changes in the staff.

Anyway..I predicted 8-4 with a ceiling of 10-2. So par for the course in a year we replaced a ton on offense, the oc, had a several key injures that mattered a lot... The defense was better in spots, but ultimately still lacks depth at LB and athleticism in the secondary. and UGA and Bama aren't falling off...

Just too many quality wins already to hang it up this quickly.

New team, new sec, new playoff system starts next year...I think there's still a lot to look forward to.
I don't think the wheels are falling off by any means. I posted earlier that the record isn't what people are pointing to, it's the way we lost. We got blown out of all our losses, not competitive against any team with a pulse.

The problem this year was lack of good QB play and another, 3rd year of a bad defense. It's my opinion we will never compete for anything meaningful as long as Tim Banks is the DC.

For this year to be a success, we needed the defense to take a step forward to offset some lost production on offense. That didn't happen. If you look at next year, while I think the offense will improve with Nico, it's not likely to be running on all cylinders. If we portal, similar to last year, I don't see the defense making significant strides. Sure, recruiting is trending the right way but we're still middle of the SEC at #7. Also, those players can't be counted on to contribute significantly as true freshman.

My point is, how long does Banks need to field a competent defense. If he doesn't next year, then can we expect year 5?

I present Kevin Steele vs Brent Venables.... Clemson was good but didn't turn Elite until Venables got there. If you think that guy is out there go get him. Banks is closer to Steele then he is Venables.

The only time he taps out is when he gets 4 carry’s in 60 seconds. That’s hard on anyone especially RB’s. Not his fault the coach will then leave him off the field for the next 4 drives
I think it has to do with more 3 and outs. Wright ran in 6 of 10 series.

People are complaining about Sampson not being more involved. You can’t have it both ways. The fact is that we are having more 3 and outs, and these guys don’t have as many chances.

My understanding, was that all his closest buds are in the league. i know nothing beyond that. i would say if he has a chance to go, he's gone.
I think Bru will move on too...look I rather get paid 800thousand and get hurt..than make NIL money which doesn't touch a rookie WR contract...

brus situation is so different. hes 24-25, slow, and was injured, badly.

he has an uphill battle. however, he's the type that will be successful no matter which avenue he goes. i think he goes pro if he grades well.

I really wish that CFB/NFL draft process was that of the CBB/NBA and players can declare and go through the draft process but still have the option to come back after they get their draft grades as long as they dont hire an agent
