Recruiting Football Talk VII

We had a walk on playing nickel after the first few plays for the entire game. LB's have freshman or backups playing outside of Beasley who can't play every snap. Walker was out and Slaughter is out of position at CB as we have lost 5 guys in the secondary. This being with a team that was short depth anyway. Wasn't a great D before we lost over half of our players. Losing Hadden means back to soft zone which we all hate and bend but don't break hopefully because we don't have Hadden against their best on an island. We have not been the same since he went out at Bama when we had held them to 7 at half. I give Banks another year with hopefully a much fuller deck with some of these young guys getting a chance. We had over 11 guys out on offense and defense. I can't believe how we had two OL out yesterday and Georgia still could not get to Joe. Of course, it didn't matter since Joe is not that good. I did not want to believe we would struggle and until injuries came like a flood, we were 7-2 but it has caught up with us big time. You can't win in the SEC with walk on guys in the secondary. McGill was right. If we had bad injury luck, we could look ugly and fans would turn on CJH. I know you are not turning on him but plenty are and with BVS, it is hard not to doubt when we see some poor decisions.
All that can be true but he still isn't qualified to do that job. His defenses have stunk since he got here. I'm over this experiment. A decent defensive coordinator would have done something. He does nothing. The offense knows our defense better than our defense knows our defense.

A: Healthy goals are dependent on what we do, not what others do. In a rebuild, it's probably not beneficial to judge Tennessee by whether MO has built a really good 9-2, talented, senior-laden team.

B: I've never really understood the idea of being personally embarrassed by the performance of college-aged strangers playing a game. That probably leads to unhealthy and entitled thinking, like judging a coach's rebuild by the quality of team another coach builds. (i.e., MO.)

C. If most thought 8-4 was a good mark for the team pre-season, it seems completely irrational to mark it as a concern after it was reached. If they lost to a team you thought they'd beat, and still reached the mark, that means they over-performed your expectations elsewhere, like maybe ATM?

Part of what makes college football fun has been seeing what your team will be, as well as finding out what other teams will be. Look at that schedule and ask: "Will MO be a doormat that we beat by 50 again? Or will they be 9-2 and really talented? Will ATM be unwinnable as the recruiting would indicate? Or can we hang? Will LSU be too much for us in at their place? Or will we blow them out? Will Bama be too much again? Or will it be a shootout that we win as time expires?"

You set yourself up by judging our rebuild with an air of entitlement. Other teams field talented teams too, even if we think that the color of the jersey alone should beat some teams on principle.
That's bull shat and you know it. I never had expectations beyond being competitive against teams we were favored to lose to. I'm not embarrassed. The team should be. We are no better than when heuple arrived. Saying a game was an embarrassment doesn't mean I'm personally embarrassed. It means it was an embarrassment for the team.

Like I've said, I love coach Heupel. I still have confidence in him. If this keeps on this track, it won't matter what I think, he'll be gone.

It’s the same answer every week, except this time he took it a step further. He takes no real accountability. Everything about him is nonchalant bravado. It’s why our body language on offense looks the way it does. No AUTHENTIC leadership by example.
you are making judgements based off a PC that Joe absolutely hates doing… The players love him and he is very supportive of his teammates…He is just not a great qb…. i’m beyond ready to move on from him but he is a VFL.

Eh I don't share the Bray hate some of our fanbase has. The guy was a bright spot in a very dark time. Also disregards his junior year UK game of 300 yards and 4TDs.
Bray had immense talent and could have been special…. Some of it wasn’t his fault…. Being coached by Dooley but it is hard to respect someone that quit on a season.

I still like Huepel and think he could be the one. Hopefully he learns quickly that blind loyalty to experience can cost you games and ultimately get you fired.
It's a lesson learned, to be certain. But in year three after inheriting a depleted roster? Going with experience was likely a necessity. Clearly this fanbase (most) know and care a lot about football, but we don't do it professionally and we aren't in the practices (maybe some insiders are). Coaches who are paid to make these evals played the guys they felt they needed to play. It's possible some of these kids just don't get it yet. Aren't big enough yet. Haven't figured it out. And that includes Nico. I don't think any of us truly know. The kid had one nice drive against Uconn, but where is the evidence he was better than Joe....right now? Will he be? I sure hope so. But 7 on 7's can only tell you so much. Joe was much better suited physically to absorb the punishment of the SEC with a mediocre O-line and WRs. I'll fully admit I fantasized about a Tua moment many times during the season, hoping we would see Nico come in and generate a spark. Didn't happen. I don't think any of us know Qbs better than Josh. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't heard any whispers from the inside that Nico was dominating in practice or scrimmages like some heard about Tua his freshman year. LA references plan B, C etc. I'll bet Nico was one of those and he just wasn't ready.
Loyalty? Maybe. Practicality? That's my guess.

Some should learn to be thankful for 3 consecutive bowl appearances at this point. I'm just thankful it's going the right direction 1 step at a time.
good info some need to be sure they read

The 5-touchdown first half against Memphis in his first start had me giggling like Brent Hubbs. I miss Denarius Moore, dude could FLY.

There isn't a bigger a-hole who has ever put on the power T. I say this not from simple observation but from personal experience and easily verified personal experiences of others who have had extensive interaction with him. There's a reason that he never did a single thing of significance at the next level. He isn't a leader, never was, and he completely wasted the obvious physical talent that he possesses.
