Recruiting Football Talk VII

Bray had nfl OL and wr all around him, and he had an offense built for him. He'd crumble in cjh offense with the OL and wr Joe is working with.
Joe had an NFL WR with Hyatt, top 10 pick at RT and was 11-21 with 150 yards vs Vandy….
Heck, brays FR year was better than Milton’s 6th year

Bray would kill it in Huepels offense just like drew lock did

Just saw those are our worst back-to-back losses since 2019. Blech.

I think it’s probably fair to say that this is the first of Heupel’s three seasons where we fell short of expectations. None of our losses were competitive. No ranked wins. Multiple games looking lost on offense and defense. Hope things can get straightened out for 2024.

I agree. I think there is some sort of psychological denial fans live in that makes them exclude those years. Those years weren’t much different than the end of the Battle era and the first half or so of the Majors era. In fact, if you look back from 1973 through 2023, those kinds of years are very much a part of the norm.

For my part, my possible delusion is that I still think Tennessee can win a national title under the right circumstances. I could be wrong but I do believe it.
The biggest delusion to me is the fans that think the "right" coach will get us back into contention in short term.

We're getting to the point where today's recruits were born after Fulmer was fired. Today's recruits think we are a 6-6 program that's going to fire their coach every 4 years.

It's going to take a little extra to convince them otherwise and get us into annual contention. The right coach can put us into contention when the stars align (like last year) and keep us competitive when they don't (this year) but until we stack the cupboard and change the narrative around the program we won't get beyond that. That takes time.

I still think Heupel is ahead of schedule.

I wouldn't bank on Bru returning ...he can make around 800,000 a year as a 4th round draft pick...what did he make in NIL money ???.

No offense to Bru, but I hope he moves on

Hasn’t been impressive here. Only three 100+ yard games. Posters going to cry but he’s meh.

The incomplete passes on three consecutive 3rd & 3's in the 1st half made me want to scream. Run the damn ball Joe Milton. He had running lanes wide open all day. I just don't get it.
This. Missed opportunities for Joe to run was probably more frustrating to me yesterday than anything in the passing game. Lot of green grass in front of him on several occasions.

Oh nO YeAR 3!!! Lol no need to spin. 8-4 was very expected.

If you didn't see this was a rebuild year after losing our FIRST EVER Biletnikoff, closest Heisman since Peyton, top-10 pick LT, top pass rusher, then losing our #1 defensive player mid-season and #1 LB off the bat....I just don't know what to say. That misperception may be on you. Our talent is just now heading in. Same as above if you can't see that.

Also love how not duplicating our best season in 20 years means that season was "lightning in a bottle". "See...he only did in 1...of the 2 years after he arrived...how lucky! 50%!" 😅😅😅
Also, if I’m not mistaken, CJH had ~65 scholarship players for the 2021 season and ~79 scholarship players in 2022. After the players we lost above plus a few more, we added about 30 newcomers (combined recruits and portal players) for 2023. I think about 40% of our 2023 roster were newcomers.

2022 was an amazing year & given our depth, even more amazing. This year is definitely a rebuild year.

I get frustrated - so frustrated in fact, that I can’t even talk about the losses for a few days. It takes me a minute to put things in perspective…but then I remember the above. I also remember what Bowlcut’s roster & culture looked like when he first started at UGA…compared to what Coach had here. I think CJH is building our program into the Tennessee Volunteers we’ll all be proud of. Patience grasshoppers…

They have zero confidence in their QB to actually get them the ball. You can see it in their body language.

Same things were said the first time Milton was starting QB. Then Hooker replaces him and the offense started to click and the receivers were good.
It affects the entire teams effort defense included. You’re not going to give max effort and discipline when your QB can only muster 7-10 points against SEC teams with a pulse. The season is what it is and it may have been a miracle Heupel got a Joe Milton led team to 8-4. But it’s still the head coaches fault for having no one better than Joe behind center in year 3

I have absolutely zero faith in this offense to smack Vandy and put the game away by halftime. Not sure why anyone would. We’ve looked putrid on that side of the hall lately.
The teams that made us look putrid are really good teams that made us one dimensional and took advantage of Milton weaknesses. Vandy can't do that. They are awful. We will have a creative run scheme and OL will find much more success against a below average front 7. We will run all over them.

Yesterday we had wr’s get open deep and Joe miss-fired on the deep shots, Keyton had a step a couple of times and Joe hung it in the air and/or took too long to throw it and the UGA db made the breakup. Then there was that over throw to Squirrel first drive of the 2nd half, and before that he threw the ball at squirrel on the screen so hard he couldn’t catch it. Oh, he also has no ability to read coverages or make checks at the LOS, which is why our tempo is slowed down
He also had the one that was on the money and the DB clearly interfered by forcing down the arm before the ball got there. It was not called, of course. I cannot totally dispute your other points. He has made a few throws this year where he went through a progression and found an open receiver. Not nearly enough, though, I agree.

Beating Bama was big, but definitely should be at least 3-6 at this point. Dooley was 0-9 and Butch was 3-12. Hopefully, we get a couple next year and then finally get Georgia in 2025. Not sure what the schedule will look like in 2025. Not going to break my heart if we don't play all three, for sure. To add to this, see the chart below for all time winning percentage. We play 3 of the top 4 (other than Tennessee) every year and last year we played all four.

Missouri has 12-14 transfers in the two deep…. There were options…. It is also worrisome that none of our OL recruits seem capable enough to even fill a back up role.
They took 11 from the portal, we took 9.

Aside from the portal...

Missouri returned 8 starters on defense, 10 of their top 13 tacklers from 2022.

They returned 4 starters on the OL. Because of injuries in 2022, 9 of their OL had starting experience (136 total starts in that unit).

Most importnantly it turned out that they had a QB that could move the chains and their big time WR recruit turned out to be a big time player. Perhaps the most surprising, and surely the biggest impact, was that their RB that stepped up into the SEC played like a man possessed.

If the point you are making is that you can strike gold or bolster some units with depth if you nail your portal evals/adds, then I agree.

Serious question, has Joe had a good game against any team that was worth a dang?

We only beat A&M because our defense played lights out. I don’t think he has played good against a single good team this year.
He never was destined to be a QB that played consistently well and won games for his team. He was always uber physically talented with plenty of limitations and no consistency or awareness. He was always a stop gap. He was good enough to give the team a chance to win games that they should win in a transition season. And if lightening strikes maybe we upset somebody. We look at some transfer options that might give us a chance to win more games but didn't find a fit that was willing to come. And we limited in that search because we wanted Nico to be able to take over next year so only really wanted to take a transfer with 1 year.

We had the best QB we could possibly get to put us in position to be elite in the future. But he was not going to come in and do it in season 1. And his family didn't want him coming in and being thrown out there in season 1 when he is not physically prepared to be successful. People try to make this so much more complicated than it really is.
