I took 3 years of Spanish in high school. After the third year (honestly after just the first 2), I could pick up a newspaper written in Spanish and while not necessarily knowing every single word, could definitely get the gist of what was being said. However, if you gave me that same article in English and told me to translate it into Spanish, there'd be quite a bit of it I couldn't do. It's akin to a toddler knowing what you are saying, but not being able to say it themselves. I was never great at listening to a Spanish speaker talk and understanding them, because they speak so much faster than English speakers. Of course now I've forgotten a ton of it.
