Megan Rapinoe & The US Soccer Team

You people don't understand. Its not because Chastain was a greater player than Rapinoe - thats not what I am comparing. If it was, Hamm would be a better comparison. Its that Chastain was a better representative.

While Chastain's actions on the field and then afterward helped make woman's soccer loved and supported by a TON of new Americans, Rapinoe's actions have had just the opposite effect, turning half the country against her and the women's team.

Chastain made Americans love women's soccer. Rapinoe has made 1/2 of America hate it. Why should America love her when she clearly shows as often as she can that she hates all of us? THAT is the difference between them and why Rapinoe, for all of her talent when younger, will fade into history, while Chastain's moment in the sun will be iconic for generations to come.

Why is it so hard for people who get to play sports all day and make millions of dollars, to just STFU, enjoy the heck out of their game and love the country they represent?

Like Huff said, this is just rambling. If “half of Americans hate women’s soccer” then Chastain is going to fall away too, except among men that like that she took her shirt off.

If people get over it and continue to watch women’s soccer, which they will, then one of the best players in USWNT history (not to mention one of the biggest household names who led us through one of the best stretches in team history) is not going to “fade into history” lol

Repeatedly in this thread, people who are out of their element with soccer keep making up facts and narratives that they crafted from watching Fox News and the like. I'm turned off by Rapinoe. Fox News is turned off by Rapinoe. My best buds Clay and Jesse are turned off by Rapinoe. Womens soccer must be losing popularity.

Any number of facts will not convince them, and they'll come back with more invented BS.

Both of these are true

Rapinoe was a great player. There was a multi-year period where she was a Top 5 player in the world.

Rapinoe had no issue playing in a meaningful World Cup game in 2023 and her "legacy" inclusion on the team put them at a disadvantage.

It's 100% true and wasn't a component of the point I was making. She should not have been on the team. The point was just all about the popularity of women's soccer.

He didn't say that. His point was to disprove the declining popularity, not to say specifically that Rapinoe was popular.

Saying "Republicans buy sneakers too" is more than what Jordan should have said if he's trying to be apolitical, but the people buying his sneakers aren't giant poons who were going to cancel him for making a political statement like that. He acknowledged Republicans for the expressed purpose of protecting his money and his business was fine. Bud Light acknowledged a trans person and their business suffered. Some members of the USWNT acknowledged issues with America and they're hated for it. We're just in a different time, now.

Right now the top-selling USWNT jerseys on Fanatics are Morgan and Rapinoe lol, all that typing just to be wrong. The awards for top scorer and best player at the 2019 World Cup both went to Rapinoe, so who are you saying the best player was?

No. Bud light didn’t simply “Acknowledge a trans person”. They celebrated a trans person by creating a commemorative can and put the trans persons face directly on the product. They chose to directly associate their primary product (The can of beer) to the trans movement in America. Many consumers chose to spend their dollars elsewhere and were and still are being labeled bigots for that decision.

We are in a different time. We agree on that.

I don’t know that anyone cried. I certainly didn’t. I just made a decision as a consumer to spend my dollars on another product. Given all the substitute products available, it wasn’t even a hard decision.

Bud light made a choice. Consumers reacted. Happens everyday. But to say they simply “Acknowledged a transperson” is disingenuous.

I'll be honest Huff, i think most people would have moved on in short order if it was just the can and original Mulvaney video....... It would have blown over if not coupled with the out of touch marketing head who went on air and publicly said the quiet part out loud insulting the main demographic that buys the product. It was the one two punch..... The statement that framed the action that was taken as an FU to the consumers.....

This is just from the outside looking in. I'm not a Bud Light fan, but it was really dumb marketing implementation if not strategy.

Rapinoe played in 4 World Cups and 3 finals over 12 years, there's an entire generation of people that grew up watching the Wambach-Lloyd-Rapinoe-Morgan teams and doesn't really care about Mia Hamm. You are overestimating the number of people that are exactly like you.
