What are you listening to?

Have you ever wondered why you like a piece of music that you like?

Check out Rick Beato’s YT channel. He has a master’s degree in music (jazz, I think) and he’s a record producer. He “gets” music in a way that I’m trying to get. He does incredible reviews of multiple music types, finding the good in all varieties.

Here he is analyzing Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, if if you ever wondered why one particular chord, one particular phrase grabs you, here’s why. (I have to study music theory, so yes, I do have to know this stuff, and he’s my hero.)

He reviews everything; metal, Latino pop, 80’s pop, yacht music, everything. He had an incredible retrospective when Gordon Lightfoot died, which you should look up (pretty sure it was on ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’.)

I had not heard that song since the 80s until it was on Stranger Things, last season I believe. Then I heard it often.

Love Kate Bush.

One of the things (many things) he praises her for is that she refused to submit to the industry's demands that she do this, that, and the other (tours, etc.) As Beato says, she just made great music.

Not to mention, she is an incredible modern dancer, at least back in 1986 when she made this video.

But as much as I'd like to have her dance abilities (and her body), it's that music, those harmonies, those chord progressions. Amazing. So far, far beyond 4-chord pop/rock.

And it starts in C minor, the same key as "Running Up That Hill." Amazing. (His songs always then move through forty-'leven different keys, but by golly, this song is in C minor.)

Peter Gabriel is one of those people who should get some sort of title/ recognition/ crown for their genius. I'm so dumbfounded by people who just (mostly intuitively) get this stuff.

My husband started playing guitar when he was 14, so 59 years ago, and was teaching guitar when he was 16. He still can't read music, but he knows music theory, can transpose up and down, knows what you mean when you say "take it down about 3 pitches", knows the circle of fifths and doesn't blink at questions about it.

Meanwhile, I can read music, have perfect pitch, and can play pretty much anything on the piano, but it's obediently following whatever the printed music (name of chord + melody) tells me to do. We live in confusion and wonder with one another.
