Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

Reread an interview with Ryan Galanie. I now believe he will sign with a MLB club. He says his goal has always been to play professionally and he has been transparent with schools recruiting him.

He says he expects to be drafted on day two ( rounds 3-10). My problem was I thought he expected to be drafted in the first few rounds. I was wrong! He says he has been told he will be a cost saving option for some club because he is 23 and has no leverage. He does say if the cost saving angle appears like he is being taken advantage of he will go to Tennessee.

He didn't play for the CCBL Kettlers last night. Perhaps getting ready for the draft.

I think Dalton Bargo is a replacement for Galanie's slot. Bargo plays other infield positions other than catcher. Found an obscure article about the most promising athletes at Missouri. Dalton Bargo was listed as Missouri's most promising baseball prospect. Bargo has three years to play college ball and Galanie only had one. We could still get them both but if not Bargo will be a great player at Tennessee.
Bringin’ the word! Good stuff.

Tony’s great at recruiting…but he can’t keep them. A couple more Vols about to hit the portal.

Side Note: No way Burns returns. I suspect he’s visiting schools in the SEC/ACC/Big 12 and I’ll bet it’s huge $. Decision has to be made by July 31 I believe.

Why are you always bashing Tony? And before you say, "but I said he's a great recruiter!", you followed it up with a backhanded, "he can't keep them". You're constantly attacking the staff. I mean, are you even a Tennessee fan, or are you a troll, just here to bash our team? Or, given how you always take up for Chase Burns, are you someone related to him that's now bitter because he's decided to leave after Tony made the correct move and moved him to the bullpen where his season was saved? He was getting shellacked as a starter. What is your deal?

Most Vol fans I’ve spoken with seem to be fine with Burns moving on. The news hurt when it first came out but we are reloading and this team is going to be really good next year. Very, very good chance we end up with Holman from Bama as well with the transfers we’ve already got.

FWIW in other portal related news, heard LSU is most likely getting the TX A&M transfer pitcher who just entered the portal.

Tony really needs to develop a pipeline downstream for exiting portals that will assist them in their goals. Lots of kids getting recruited over. I was kinda rough on @mr.checkerboards. Change can be rough.

I’ve confirmed that Burns’ major is only offered at LSU (and UT obviously)—it’s not offered at TCU or Vanderbilt. He’s a smart young man and knows he will need a college degree after his MLB career is over. Plus, he needs to be eligible right away so I think it’s LSU (or a remote chance that he comes back to TN). I prefer the latter! 🍊😃👍👊😀🍊
So Burns' agent is really full of bad advice. 😂

I bet CTV is doing that. Heupel has been a pro at it so far. It's important.

It sucks. Give me kids like Kirby, Sewell.... Ferguson, Russell etc..... kids that committ as a freshman and we get to actually watch grow and mature. Not whatever this crap is.
All these transfers aren't coming to ride the bench. They'll take prime spots from guys who have been here working their asses off to get a chance.
I'd rather see Kendro or Jaslove at short than Ammick. Give me DD or Tears in the OF. Give me Stark or Charlie behind the plate. Whether he wants to be here or not Give me a 3rd year Burns over Snead.

Exactly. Some hot-shot transfer comes here to jump on the bandwagon that was created by those type of guys you mentioned and it has to screw up morale, commitment and team chemistry.
This no-fault, immediate transfer portal and the NIL cesspool will destroy the college athletics I grew up playing in and being a fan of. Greed is the root of all evil.

Or...you won't or are unable to recognize that he did not have situational awareness in the heat of battle. Happens to the best of us. This has been litigated to death...your myopia is not proof of concept. Also...wrong forum..you're situational awareness is suspect.

As you should be “aware,” I was responding to a conversation that was already occurring on this board between multiple posters.

And as you should be “aware,” I said in an earlier post, his situational awareness was bad in that he left the pocket and took off running. On that we agree. That’s not the debate.

But he did not “step out of bounds.” He was hit and knocked out of bounds. We know this because there is footage of him getting hit and knocked out of bounds that is plain as the nose on your face. I’ve posted an actual still shot of him getting hit IN BOUNDS and the follow-up shot of him going out of bounds as a result. If that’s not proof enough for you that he was knocked out of bounds, then reality is all an illusion to you.

Simple, I see it more from a players perspective.

Did you play for Tony? If not, your perspective is skewed.

No. We all have our opinions. I simply think about the players. Not wrong, just my take. Yours is not wrong, it’s your take.

For example: Some see the program bringing in a catcher (Peebles) and how that elevates us (which it does) I think more about the other guys that were also recruited like Ryan Miller, Cal Stark, Charlie Taylor, etc. I suspect those guys will stay as a backup or hit the portal.

And I will add, as I said in a previous post, Tony will thrive in this new era of NIL & Portal. He is the new wave of NCAA coaches regardless of the sport. Old school is out, new school is in. As I also said, it has an impact in other areas but that's the price to be paid when building a championship team that needs to win now (well, 2024), and that is what he is paid to do.

At this time, nothing new to report on former Alabama right-handed pitcher Luke Holman. As we mentioned on the GQ earlier this week, it’s likely to come down between Tennessee and LSU. That list has trimmed down significantly from the 15 programs who were in play when he first entered the portal to the SEC cluster of Florida, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Auburn who were also involved as late as last week.

Tony Vitello and Frank Anderson have really connected with the family. His dad, Craig, pitched in the Philadelphia Phillies organizations for nearly 10 years and the family likes the direction here at Tennessee and the team that will be on the field next season. Will it be enough? We will see. Holman plans to visit Knoxville when he wraps up his stint with Team USA and is penciled in for July 15-16. As of right now, that’s the only visit that’s scheduled. Drew Beam continues to work this one.

Another name to keep an eye on is former Coastal Carolina southpaw Liam Doyle. Tennessee’s transfer portal class is nearly full, but we project the Vols could have spots for two more. A lot of that could depend on the upcoming MLB Draft as well and if any other current players decides to enter the transfer portal. The window closes on July 13. However, this is an important note: Players must have entered the portal by July 1 to transfer within the conference.

Some have asked about Chase Burns and his next landing spot and wondering if there was any way he might come back to Tennessee. No one is suggesting to us that he might return, but the longer there’s silence on his future, the more those rumors will grow.
