SNIT’S THOUGHTS ON DEFENSIVE METRICS

Having seen Riley make two
great plays along the third-base line this past week, I opted to ask Snitker if those moments indicated Riley’s ability at third base might be better than the defensive metrics show. If you’re triggered by criticisms of defensive metrics, skip to the next section.
“You can take those defensive metrics and put them you know where,” Snitker said. “I judge defense with my eyes, not those defensive metrics. It blows me away every year when I look at the Gold Glove candidates and the numbers they have. All I know is Austin Riley is one of the best defensive third basemen in the game.”
Riley entered Sunday ranked 33rd among qualified third basemen with -2
Outs Above Average. He ranked 33rd out of 36 qualifiers last year with -6 OAA.
I’m with Snitker. A lot of great metrics have been produced over the years, but too many times, it feels like the numbers don’t tell us what our eyes have seen.
