But doesn't that mean the other families being killed by AR-15's need AR-15's to defend themselves from family killers using AR-15's?

Think about how you might view a BLM shirt, a vagina hat, or an LBGTQ rainbow unicorn shirt. Now multiply whatever negative connotations you have by 5, and you have a taste of how you would be viewed.
