Everyone thinks you are suppose to box out right at shot release…. Which is incorrect if you want to rebound the basketball.
When I played, my job was to prevent the opponent’s best rebounder from rebounding. My stat line sucked. But so did my assignment’s stat line. Coach never showed my stat line , but definitely showed me the other player stats…my 15 minutes of fame. Opponent was 6’9” (me 6’1”) blocked 3 of his shots in the first half. He had 2 points and 0 rebounds. The coach took me out for a breather and my replacement (6’7”) let him out rebound him and score 6 points before the coach let me back in. 2nd half, I never came out. He scored 4 points, 1 rebound. He got so frustrated that he lost his mojo completely. I definitely played only to ruin the other guys day. I never had trouble with the bigger guys. The shorter quick guys gave me fits.

I love CRB’s defense.
Don’t get me wrong, it was a med school league, but some of the players were former D-1 athletes…I could always eff up their game with one brief conversation. Usually waited until 2nd half.
Me: Dude you’re having a rough game. Don’t sweat it though, I was an elite athlete too. HS and D-1.
Him: where’d you play?
Me: HS in Memphis, college Tennessee.
Him: damn, good basketball in Memphis and Tennessee plays tough.
Me: oh, I didn’t play basketball…
Him: what sport then?
Me: I was a cheerleader

Him: speechless

I did enjoy teaching my team the 1-3-1 zone. It’s an awesome defense (unless I had a man assignment)
I know, cool story bro…
