Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

You may be content with that. However, alot of us are getting bored with those results. Speaking of bored, the stylistic play of the program hasn't really been enjoyable to watch since Grant & Admiral left.

"a lot of us" is very few of the fanbase though, your constant assumption that YOUR preference/opinion carries more weight is exhausting for the wider majority of the fans that love Barnes and what he's built the men's basketball team into.

Playing shut down defense isn’t boring. The results are as good as they’ve ever been at TN.

A Final Four is within reach. Starting over will almost certainly knock the program way below where it stands today. It isn’t at all about being content.

Obviously no way to verify, but you were sick of Bruce and ready for him to move on? Still haven’t answered about Tony V, his results getting to be boring for you?

I used to think of you as a really fair and level-headed poster with some quality insight, but you have really been showing your ass these past two weeks and melting down over basically nothing. You’re being completely ridiculous and unfair towards Barnes. Playing with himself? What are you, 12? Geez man.
I may have been giving him too much credit when I said 16 year old girl

I never said anthing about kicking Barnes to the curb and starting over. Would just like to see him take a different approach and stop being stubborn.

I don’t get it. It’s one thing to talk about your disappointments in certain philosophies, it’s another thing to result to baseless childish insults that provide no value to the conversation.

100%, and it’s bizarre because I swear like 2-3 years ago he seemed like a solid poster (although trying to portray himself as an insider)…then again someone who makes stuff up to try and be an internet insider of all things is also likely to then be the same overly dramatic person on the internet hurling around baseless insults.

Pearl had only 2 seasons with 25 wins, one of them happened to get a favorable bracket and got hot enough to make the Elite Eight. But the off the court issues and the cheating of the staff was honestly too much for me...by the time Pearl was leaving I was ready for it.

Gotta make the tournament to have a chance at a run when you get there, so I'll be content with winning 20+ and getting into the tournament every year.

Barnes produced the 5th highest scoring team in program history and the 5th best defensive team in program history. Only Ray Mears has also accomplished that, but unlike Mears both of those teams from Barnes won 25 or more games and made Sweet Sixteens.

Well, no I was a teen when Bruce was at Tennessee and I didn't know any better. Tony is only on year 5 and has gotten to Omaha which is greater than a Sweet Sixten imo. Plus, he actually tries to improve the roster through the portal and doesn't let personalities deter him. Plus, his teams are actually exciting to watch.

He isn’t all that stubborn. The philosophy has changed often other than playing defense is a requirement.

Players that buy in and are solid defenders get minutes. The defense doesn’t excel if there is a weak link.

I guess that's just my opinion. An elite defense is fine, but you can't be bad on offense as well. I guess you can say a Final Four is in reach after seeing how the tournament panned out this year. I just think there's more that can be done to improve your chances.

It’s essentially the same thing lol, and he won’t have gotten that far the following 2 years which according to those on here apparently means he has peaked and hit his ceiling, right? Again there’s more than just the portal, roster retention and HS recruiting are just as if not more important, so if those are also producing winning results I’m not sure I get why portal recruiting is some major issue?

I’m also not sure what’s exciting about watching us run the bases like a tee ball team or give up unearned run after unearned run, but ok then lol.

San Diego State got to the national title game with an offense that Kenpom said was worse than ours.

I think this disdain for Barnes by many UT fans is because they don’t want a nice guy as a UT coach- they want a rebel. This element of UT fans are ecstatic when Kevin O’Neill stands on a table in his orange blazer and shakes his fists at the crowd in Nashville after beating Vandy, Bruce Pearl paints his torso orange, takes his shirt off, and flexes, Lane Kiffin trash talks our opponents all the time, Tony Vitello goes totally ballistic on umpires, etc.

People that eat up those kind of antics don’t like Barnes because he doesn’t do that stuff- although he still works refs albeit without the vulgar language that he used earlier in his career- and look for any and every opportunity to bash him.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should lol.

Nothing wrong with winning primarily because your defense holds the opponents to scoring fewer points rather than scoring at a high rate only to have opponents counter and cancel out your scoring. I really don’t care if it isn’t entertaining like a video game. Winning is the objective.

Maintaining this level of defense while elevating the offense would be a great scenario. Punter, Admiral, Grant, Bone, Chandler, Springer, Keon, Kennedy, Lemonte, and others have been able to score. A reliable second scoring threat every game was missing from the 2022-23 team but TN still managed to win a bunch of games and stay ranked every week.

Just stop.

Tennessee hasn’t been anymore relevant in basketball than it is now.

How long have you been watching?

It was…the equivalent of your statement would be like saying “well we were kenpom Top 5 so we deserved to be in a Final Four” lol
My point was, just bc SDSU wasn't good on offense and got as far as they did doesn't make it okay lol, they were quite frankly extremely lucky to get to the title game. Hell, they might have won a title if they were even average offensively.
