Shouldn’t you be off sniffing a dogs butt? I haven’t drank that much that I would. Say, I’m sure you have pictures laying around of you doing that. Feel free not to share them.

What’s the weather forecast for today?
Gale warnings remain in effect until 4 am tomorrow; looks like it should start drying up though; all ferries on Pamlico Sound canceled again today; they’re taking reservations for tomorrow, but I sure wouldn’t trust that the morning sailings will go. We have a reservation on the last one out (4:30), so if it happens, we’ll spend the night in Beaufort (oh darn again) and drive back Tuesday.

All reservations outbound tomorrow (6 different sailings) are taken except for a few left on the 4:30.

Do the ferries make multiple stops, or are they direct, Ocracoke to Beaufort?

It’s Ocracoke - Cedar Island (ours) or Ocracoke - Swan Quarter. Cedar Island is about an hour’s drive from Beaufort, depending on the number of Winnebagos ahead of you. Swan Quarter is on the mainland, middle of nowhere.

There’s also a much smaller ferry from the north end of Ocracoke to Hatteras (very short run), but it doesn’t take reservations and then you have to drive way the hell up the Outer Banks to get to a bridge to the mainland. Their ops are also suspended, and when they do reopen, there’ll be hundreds of crazed vacationers trying to get out. We’re not going anywhere near that!

Where is this? I bet Tiffany would love the lighthouses.

Fortunately, the grocery store (singular) and the few open restaurants got their supplies in when the ferries were still running, so everyone’s in good shape. This isn’t as disruptive as when the dredging ops trying to keep the channels open cut the internet, cellular, and/or power lines from Hatteras. THAT’S when the cussin’ starts.

NC Outer Banks. She would LOVE the lighthouses along OBX! It’s a lot of driving to get here, though.

5 1/2 hours from Charlotte to the Cedar Island ferry terminal, and 2 1/2-3 hours on the car ferry to Ocracoke. If you want to keep going, drive 20-30 minutes up the island to the Hatteras ferry, an hour or so to cross, then up the rest of the Banks (on roads, unless washed away by a hurricane.)

I love it here and would move in a heartbeat. Come visit before it’s all underwater. (They’ve already had to move the Hatteras lighthouse.)

Ocracoke lighthouse is the white one on the map:
