Onward to pulling for Memphis with UT's early exit

Cal doesn't even want to play the game. It's been a rivalry for one year (last year). We can go ahead and agree to disagree.

A rivalry game is defined by the fans, not the coach. The fans have decided that the UT-Memphis game is a cross-state bragging rights rivalry in basketball.

When I first moved to Memphis I went to a UT game at the Pyramid. As I recall, both the Vols and the Tigers sucked, but the place was a hard sell-out. And that place never sold out.

A rivalry is a game that's played on average more than once every five years.

If it is a rivalry, it's behind UK, Florida and Vandy.

It doesn't really matter. The UF football game never even approached a rivalry until about 1990 and now it's almost as regarded as the Bama game.

Are you actually calling LSU-Auburn not a rivalry? While both teams have been in the same conference for 114 years, they only played 26 times prior to the east-west split in 1992. Now that game has become one of the best series in the conference.

If you take away the Buzz years when he favored playing a non-conference schedule that included teams like Campbell and UNC-Asheville, we've played Memphis every year since '88, for what it's worth.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Apples to oranges when comparing football to basketball, especially when the SEC split into specific divisions.

Florida became a big rival because the SEC split into divisions and we were basically the only two teams competing to go to the SECC.

One OOC game a year does not a great rivalry make.

I hate Memphis with the burning passion of a thousand STDs. That hatred didn't come along until Calipari.

How will I ever sleep at night?

Dimming the lights, turning on some soft lullabies, and closing your eyes?

I wasn't being a jerk - just trying to help you understand that UT-Memphis is a basketball rivalry.

As a Memphis fan I can say I am truely sorry that Tenn. had less sucess than you had hoped for. I think Bruce Pearl is a good guy trying to do a good job and he will bring the school sucess given enough time. When Coach Cal was taking Memphis to the NIT, we Memphis fans stood behind him and supported his efforts. Maybe that is why he did not leave us later after he had sucess and an opportunity to go NC State. I see no reason for anybody who loves basketball to bad mouth another team or coach. Both schools benefit from the visability of playing each other. The games are close and watched by the nation. What's wrong with that. Can't we be friendly and competative? Why is hate and bitterness better? I argue with Memphis fans all the time about this, and some get it and some don't. If you have had to put up with a jerk Memphis fan, I am sorry, but being hostile in return really doesn't make any sense to me. It is ok if you don't want pull for Memphis. I understand that you only have one favorite team. But it makes no sense to run another program down and hope for their destruction. Tennessee has done fine over the years and doesn't need to do that.

Here is the order of hatred for the majority of Memphis BB fans:

1. Kansas
2. Louisville
3. Cincinatti
4. UT

Memphis-UT will continue to be played as long as Vols are relevant nationally. If the program slips back into the doldrums, Cal will buyout/replace with a national game. Don't believe it, ask Arkansas and Mississippi.

No one's arguing it is.

Just out of curiosity, what don't you get? Surely you're not saying the biggest game on both team's schedules isn't a rivalry. Don't you sense the whole inferiority/no respect thing going on?

Call me crazy, but you kind of did say it was bigger, by claiming it was the biggest game on both team's schedules, and since Tennessee would be one of those teams.

I agree it's a rilvalry but in no way is it the biggest game on the schedule. At least for UT it's not.

Biggest regular season games last 4 years for Tigers were:

2008-2009: Syracuse, @ Gonzaga
2007-2008: Georgetown (attendance record at FEF), UT.
2006-2007: Kentucky in Maui, @ Arizona
2005-2006:UCLA, Duke in Pre-Season NIT, @ Texas, Gonzaga

5-5 in your biggest regular season games. And you left out getting drilled in Knoxville in 06-07 balanced by winning at home in 05-06. The Dane Bradshaw games had a nice element thanks to his press clippings.

You've said what I've been trying to say. The third or fourth biggest rival for both teams is not much of a rivalry, and really most years the game means very little. It is far from the biggest game on either teams schedule.

You have absolutely lost your mind with that list. Kansas - yeah, right. The others could be a starting list in the order of 2, 4, 3. And Cincinnati may have dropped out of the top 3 actually. Louisville will be on top from a hate standpoint, but UT is a close second.

I'd have to agree with Kansas not being on the list . All I have for those guys is respect .

Really looserville and where ever Huggins is coaching are the only ones i dont like . Well UAB too , but that's just b/c they spit and throw stuff at the players .

My Tigers matchup well against Memphis.

My Tigers match up well against Mizzou. Much is being made about the pressing style of both teams. What is interesting is the fact that Mizzou does not defend as well in half court sets while Memphis does. So it will be interesting to see what Mizzou can do if this is a slower paced game than they would like.
