2023 Transfer Portal - General NCAA Thread

Returning 11.

(3) Juniors:
Aidoo, Mashack, ZZ (injured so how soon will he be back and will he be the same Z?)

(5) Sophomores: (if everyone returned, including RS guys here)
Julian, Awaka, BJ, DJ, Freddie

(3) Freshmen:
JP, Cade, Carr (everyone forgets this dude, he might be the Santi replacement we're all looking for)

Priority #1 is a ball handling guard, if he can score at all 3 levels fantastic. But he has to be able to handle the ball and beat the press on his own I would also want him to be 6'0" or taller (prefer 6'2").

Priority #2 is a bucket getter in the paint, doesn't have to be a true big...but a guy that is 6'6" or bigger and attacks the rim, off the drive, off lobs, off put backs, whatever it may be. A guy that's already shown to be a 15 a night guy regardless of where he was before.

I feel like we'll see some attrition from those 8 that should be returning though, who I don't know but would be a bit surprised if no one hit the portal.

I’ve said this before, Phillips had a lot of yucky tack injuries all year— wrist, hand, hip. His best basketball was in the early season. He has a great relationship with coaches and knows he’s been a letdown. I also see his body language, lack of success/fit and frustration about it. If I were reading just that, I’d say he’s gone, but I think it’s actually more complex than that. I’m pre-season practice he was taking our best defenders on the drive. Don’t know where that guy went.

This is good to know. I’m glad he has a strong relationship with the coaches. I was basically making my statement off of body language. He just generally looks unhappy on the court lately. But, he’s been dealt a rough hand so I can completely understand. I hope he’ll stay.

I don’t think BJ stays. He had the biggest chance to gain minutes after ZZ went down and they went with Mashack

Basilio saying he's hearing that Drew Pember may end up at Michigan, next year. As always, grain of salt.
I hope not. He’s a great fit for where he is. I don’t think he comes close to doing what he did at UNCA in a bigger league. Then again, maybe not being the main guy on the team would free him up more. When they’ve played the big teams, they know all they gotta do is focus on him, wouldn’t be case in BIG Ten. IDK.

Well no way that’s true. This board says he can’t play at this level.
And from what we’ve seen, they are right, but it isn’t a knock on him. It’s rare to play at that level. He’s a really good player. What had he done against the major programs when given the chance, that proves those people wrong?

Do any of those seniors have a year of eligibility left and if so who do we think would be asked/encouraged to stay?

ON, Santi, JJJ, and Uros all could return with the COVID year. From other insiders I've heard that 1 of them is considering it (don't know who, got the general vibe it wasn't JJJ though).

JJJ had 100% been “considering” returning. He was 50/50. The 3 international seniors weren’t expected to return. All of that was from before the regular season had wrapped up.

I wonder if it ever gets to resembling “trades” or putting players with big NIL deals on “waivers”. Maybe there are already de facto waiver wires if deals are a year at a time. But what happens if a player’s contract is for several years and they don’t pan out?

I’ve never seen an NIL contract. I wonder how much of the deals are “guaranteed”. What about performance based “bonuses”? What about cutting under performers loose (or just stop paying them or paying them less)? I would assume that there are clauses that deal with bad character issues. Except for those on a Bama roster.

The NCAA doesn’t approve of “pay for play”. Right. Good luck with that.

Pember has since said he plans to stay at UNCA, which I kinda thought he might do all along. He's likely grown accustomed to being the big fish in a small pond, and he's seen how the other side looks of not playing as much as you like.

Yes. I want to see him do well. I think UNCA could add some help for him. If he could go to Michigan and get solid minutes and have a great season, I’d love to see that, I just think he’d be wise to stay at UNCA and get Big South POY again. He also could take advantage of that Covid year couldn’t he? Next year would be 5th year? So he could always move to a p5 for 6th year. Am I mistaken?

I’d love to see ON and Santi back. Maybeee jjj too.

We would be good if they came back but honestly I would rather all move on and try and make a living out of basketball while they still can. None would improve beyond where they are already at. They left their mark on the program, and had some great wins.

The kid you “despise” in the post above led the PAC 12 in 3’s made this season but go off, king

PG - Taran Armstrong 6’5 and SF- Jamison Battle 6’7

My biggest wants right now. Now if Joe Girard returns to college, I’d like us to make a hard run at him

I'm not hating on you Trippie, but I hope we do better. Advanced stats aren't very kind to either of those guys.

I can see what you mean with Armstrong, but I wouldn’t mind Girard at all.

16.4 ppg
2.8 rpg
3.0 apg
40% FG
86% FT
38% 3PT%

I understand the turnovers to assist ration isn’t pretty, but hey we could end up with another Key, so I’d take this kid. Lol
