Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

I can understand that. I am not sure narrative is just about the Tournament as the issues have come up even before the Tournament. I just don't think the offense for his teams are very good which is what limited him. He probably needs a Kevin Durant or Grant Williams type player to fuel his offense.

I think some of it is the playstyle. We have the #1 defense for a reason, we play slow and slow the game down so our offense (and opponent's offense) puts up far less points. It is basically the opposite of our Football Team. This playstyle is common with B1G teams who also tend to struggle sometimes in March (i.e. Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin, etc.).

One item that is missing that would power Barnes' system well is strong Power Forward/Center play. It is no surprise that we were the best when we had Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield because they fit Barnes system very well. Plavsic and Aidoo are not those players (although Aidoo is young and is showing some potential). If Barnes could get a Glenn Davis, Brandon Williams, or frankly for an extreme view, a Shaquille O'Neal type player that is consistent about scoring in paint or drawing fouls, we might have a Final Four team.

I think the coaching knows that we are missing those pieces based on comments in recruiting, etc. Not sure why we haven't found it. The game has changed to favor perimeter shooting and speed up games but I think Barnes system can work, it just doesn't have the right players at the moment.

As to play style, that’s not how efficiency numbers work. It’s calculated by points per possession, so it doesn’t matter how quick or slow a team plays. That’s why UVA has a decent offensive efficiency- they slow it down (that’s pace) but it doesn’t change points per possession.

UT was #1 in defensive efficiency all year until recently.

Dude lost to a 16 rank team. You'll fire Rick Barnes for making the tournament every year and having us ranked number 2. Just go away. People like you are why our football team sucked for 20 year.
I am fairly certain Mike Hamilton, Lane Kiffin, Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, Pruitt and a multitude of others are the reasons why our football team sucked for 20 years...I am 60% sure Volnation members had nothing to do with it....

DUKE 75
Vols 59

We finished the season ranked 20th in the AP, so making the Sweet 16 would mean we outperformed our final ranking... Criticizing coaching decisions is fair game, but anyone calling for Coach Barnes to be replaced is absolutely delusional - they're not going to fire a man who repeatedly makes the tournament at school that has NEVER made a Final 4 appearance. I want to win it all so badly, but I'll never take making the tournament for granted...

MY biggest coaching criticism is I feel like our substitution patterns are out of rhythm; the 1st "line" change Coach Barnes made opened the game up a little bit - I can't tell you exactly who was out there, because we sub so much - and it feels like I never saw those five on the floor together again.

Anyway, I'm thankful for Coach Barnes and thankful my favorite team in the world (sans Vol Football) is still playing in the Big Dance.

I don't want a change at Coach at all, but I am of the opinion that Coach Barnes coaches stagnant offensive teams quite frequently. The fact he had no plan B for PG outside of PG by committee by a couple of Two-guards makes me scratch my head. He is successful and has brought UT some big wins, now he needs to change his approach on offensive philosophy. The team was melting down before ZZ got hurt and I wonder if their legs weren't there at the end of the season. Anyway, I am glad our Vols are still dancing, but I do not think they have the offense to stay with Duke.

This is my gripe. If Barnes is going to run this offense, at least recruit the right players to the system. I thought Polinsky would help in that regard.

Man, I know I’m not the biggest basketball fan in general, and a lot of that has to do with how little anyone cared about or talked about our Mens team while I was growing up. I’ll probably never become the biggest fan of the game even though I try now, but if we had these teams and Barnes while I was growing up, I could easily see myself having grown into a big fan as an adult. Barnes isn’t perfect, but he’s made us relevant and has brought national attention to our program in a positive way. Fair criticism is fair, but there’s a lot of unfair and unrealistic hyperbole here about Barnes.

How modest were our goals in the 1980's? We had a coach (DeVoe) miss the NCAA Tournament 5 straight seasons (1984-1988) and we didn't fire him. LOL.

You people wanting Barnes to be fired or retire are idiots. Who do you think we could possibly get that would be better than him? He has us in the NCAA tournament and ranked year after year.

Not calling for his head but this idea when Barnes is gone the program will fall off a cliff and we'll have to settle for a no name is ridiculous. Don't ask me who I would hire. That's Danny Whites job.

I agree. We've hit a ceiling with Barnes

I believe that Barnes has made UT an attractive destination. If he's fired, though, or if there's a perception that his retirement was forced, the opening will become quite a bit less attractive.

Every situation is different. Last night, Rick made the right decision.

Tomorrow will be a different situation.
Not really he has a history of doing it. See Grant in OT against Purdue. Sat him to start OT and gave Duke 2 free possessions. Purdue got all the momentum and there was nothing TN could do.

Yeah coaches will be nervous about a possible $5 million salary.

I’m thinking probabilistically, not deterministically. Our program is not a blue blood so there’s no guarantee we could get anyone better than Barnes. The best coaches will likely go elsewhere if given the choice. Heck, it took a lot of convincing and a raise for us to even keep Barnes from going to UCLA. All I’m saying is that IMO the probability of us getting a coach better than Barnes is very low.

Did Grant have four fouls at start of OT?

I am not saying Rick always makes the correct decision.

I've never seen a coach who makes 100% correct in-game decisions.

Agree. Him retiring on his own time would be best. The problem is some coaches egos won’t let them retire until they’ve run the program into the ground. And before you know it the recruiting starts to fall off. If recruiting starts to fall off he may force our hand

Barnes or really any coach , They can only do so much, they can’t get on the court and play for them , they can’t help the 15 turnovers etc, we will get it figured out and hopefully go deep into the tourney

He did.
But in a game like that you have to trust your SEC POY...... I get it if it's Mid January, but when all the marbles are on the table you have to let your stones hang.
