Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

I don't think the contract "hurting recruiting" is a factor here.... did it hurt UNC recruiting with Roy? Did it hurt Duke with Coach K? It isn't some grand secret that Rick Barnes is likely done in the next few years.... It is absolutely hilarious to me that we essentially have two camps now.... Those who think Barnes is overpaid and overrated and those who think the program will flounder if he isn't extended and kept happy.....

While yes, I agree with you, that there isn't a financial burden coming, I think the trade off with Barnes is fewer extension years in exchange for higher pay. Barnes coaching into his 70's would be very surprising.

Please don't think I'm in the camp predicting the program will flounder without CRB, I think if we/he handle his retiring correctly it could be a huge positive. I just think CRB and DW need to be thinking about the future of the program and planing for his departure all the while keeping the train rolling for the next couple of seasons.

Hell, who knows, Barnes might call it quits as soon as they are out of the tourney.

They should sit down after the season and discuss assistant coaches. Barnes needs a coach with fresh offensive schemes.
His replacement in a couple of years.
You think the best we can do for our next coach is promoting a first time HC from within? I hope Barnes lives forever if that’s the case.

Barnes didn’t build sh—. That was done under Pearl and still held together until Barnes arrived.

Amazing the lengths some of you sheep will go to to salivate over a guythat Texas fired and hasn’t been beyond the Sweet Sixteen in 14 friggin’ years. “We can’t do better”😂

What a joke.

Ramar Smith wants your address. He is just waiting to know how much cash is there.

I’d trade making a Final Four for not making one. Hell, Pearl’s made a FF since Barnes and he had to sit out three years!

You also know some of the players used to get to that final 4 had to sit for an entire year, an assistant coach was sent to jail, and Pearl did not comply with an NCAA investigation. We're talking about Auburn though.

Yeah I guess it's a crazy idea, I mean schools like North Carolina would never promote an assistant coach. 😉

We’ll see how that pans out for UNC long term. They had a great tournament run last season, but based on how disappointing they’ve been this season, that run to the title game looks very much like a fluke. My guess is Hubert in the end works out for UNC about like Kevin Ollie did for UCONN.

Typical Rick Barnes year:
January 7-1
February 4-5
March 0-1

i suspect TN will win one game in the SECT and then lose and do the same in the NCAA tourney. If that holds, they finish Feb-March at a 6-8 clip. Underwhelming to say the least. But at least it was done with good talent, right Thunder?

I doubt Barnes is going to give up his cushy job and go to a school like Ole Miss at the age of 68...... No one is going to force Rick out. I think its very realistic Barnes is in his last 2-3 years.... While annoying that we can surpass the elevated expectations he caused, no one with actual power is pushing for a convo to start about changing the head coach.
Define cushy. We have completely different perceptions of what a "cushy" job is in this day and age. You could use a better choice of words but cushy is not correct. Fulmer's job was Cushy in his later years as he used the system to get paid. I don't see that in Rick Barnes. Try another word or better verbiage. Offensively, I think the game has past him by and he focuses too much on Defense.

Rick Barnes has Tennessee on autopilot to make the tourney, bring in multiple highly rated prospects, and doesn’t risk one iota of scandal year in and year out… all while making near tops in the country money.

Also while the perceived doom and gloom in the fanbase cries he’s lost his edge and game has surpassed him.

Yes, he indeed has a cushy job. No majority of fans thought he would accomplish as much as he had outside of the tourney shortcomings when he took this job. Man is playing with house money and good for him. He’s earned it. God knows who we would have wound up with if he didn’t take a chance of Tennessee and vice versa.

"Auburn doesn't give a sh*t if you cheat"
It's quite obvious when you look around the country at the consistently FF and E8 teams, no one cares.
You a baseball fan? Did Tony V cheat?
Everyone “cheats” all the holy rollers judging sports coaches is rather comical, and hypocritical!

People also forget that in Pearl’s final season, Tony Jones had a better record in SEC play as acting head coach (5-3) than Pearl did (3-5). I remember some fans on Facebook (back when it was cool) suggesting Pearl had lost his touch and a change was needed.
That is the worst post in the history of VN! We all know Facebook is still cool.
