OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

Finally a crappy list that the Lions aren’t on.
Only teams that are part of the bird family find ways to mess up in crucial situations during the Super Bowl. Seahawks don’t give the ball to Beast Mode, Falcons blow a 28-3 lead, Eagles have their star QB go all Clint Stoerner and give away 7 points.

Incidentally, this was an actual headline on the falcons sbnation site (falcoholics…) a few weeks ago

Why the Chargers’ collapse against the Jaguars was worse than 28-3
Everyone remembers Super Bowls. Not everyone remembers Wild Card Weekend. The stakes are much higher and once you get to the Super Bowl it’s suppose to be the two best teams in the sport. Neither the Jags or Chargers stood a chance of winning the Super Bowl so it will not be remembered in the same light as the Falcons meltdown.

Yep, that was wishful thinking and pretty stupid

I know the shift going away will be a big deal but I think the 2 pickoffs limit could be a game changer for base stealers. I expect stolen base numbers to jump significantly.

Goodbye, shift! Hello, pitch clock!? Why MLB is betting big on new rules for 2023 season
I agree. I do think that 15 seconds between pitches is a little short. Also, the hitters that step out every pitch to adjust their cup, adjust their helmet, readjust their batting gloves, spit, take 4 practice swings, stare down the pitcher, toe the chalk and other things they do, are going to have to make some huge adjustments.

I hope it pares down some time. Look at how short these games lasted in the 1930s without the tv time outs, bringing in the one out 6th inning specialist against the right handed batter, etc.

I think we will see significantly shorter games. They tested these rules in the minors and those games finished roughly 25 minutes sooner than before the rules were implemented. It may not be that drastic of a change but I could see the game times shrink by at least 15 minutes easily, which is still a big chunk of game time.

On February 14 in Baseball History...
  • 1887 - Chicago's National League club sells Mike King Kelly to Boston for the unheard-of sum of $10,000.

  • 1957 - The Georgia Senate unanimously approves Senator Leon Butts' bill barring blacks from playing baseball with whites. Religious gatherings are the only exceptions to this bill.

  • 1976 - The Braves send Valentine's Day cards to their season-ticket holders and the media. The Braves finished in fifth place in 1975, 40 games behind Cincinnati. Atlanta will finish the 1976 season in last place, 32 games behind the Reds, but they are first in rhyming. Their card reads: Rose is a Red Morgan's one, too. They finished first, Like we wanted to. But last year's behind us; We're happy to say. Now we're tied for first, Happy Valentine's Day.

15-25 minutes would (or could) seem like an eternity. I’m all for trying this stuff. I still think about the Cards-Reds series at Busch back in 2019. Because of rain, TS and I were “forced” to see consecutive doubleheaders on back-to-back days. First game started Saturday at noon, and 4th game ended Sunday at 9pm. Four full games in a total span of 33 hours. I do love me some baseball.
