Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Water in the front of house ran and tested clean. We're connected to a hair salon for plumbing and one of them flushed a freakin hand towel. It's being fixed as we spek and I'm being reimbursed for the potentially lost business.

Are you in the red building next to Aveda? I was cruising street view on Google Earth last night, and that seemed like a possibility. Are there several sublevels below your bar? I bought speakers in the '70s from a company manufacturing them further up Gay St. The guys gave me a tour, and there were several sublevels below the street level, and I remember a couple of doors that would apparently have led under the street. The kind of city underground thing that would be interesting to explore.

Let me just foreshadow what the TN football team is going to do to South Carolina next year. The basketball team is up 76-33 on South Carolina with about 7 minutes left. I'm guessing the football team will score at least 76 but will only give up 3 to 6 points.

Just saw the final 85 to 42...wow. without looking it up, we actually shot the 3 worth a damn. We almost beat no6? Arizona at their spot and couldn't buy a 3....beat no2 gonzaga but still didnt shoot the 3 that well...when we actually DO shoot the 3 well, we have games like our 21 point blowout of UNC last season etc.

I love Barnes...hope we keep him til he retires honestly. He is gonna have his teams play insane defense, run when they can, and shoot the 3 anytime its open. We will live and die against top 10 teams based on actually hitting or missing those 3s IMO. Btw...Zakai Zeigler is still my favorite. Comes off the bench at 5ft9 and is faster than anyone else on the court. Instant offense, and a solid 3 point shooter. Some nights, he is a great 3 point shooter. Love that dude

Barnes will always have great regular seasons and blow it in the tourney.

Now, if the Lady Vols do the same thing that has real meaning.

How does a battery go dead with the car in drive? Shouldn’t it be running?
I can see a modern car have the alternator die with the engine running, especially with a woman driving it, and the engine die when the battery craps out. Probably not a very likely scenario, but you have to admit a crappy ass design when you cant'd shift into park and have an electric parking brake like most cars do now days.

Didn't your wife get a new Subaru Hog? Don't let the battery go dead.

Believe it or not when my battery died - one cell gone - reading 9. something volts at the posts. I could start the car about half the time. I've never had a car that would turn over like that, I started the car the day I drove to a parts place to get a new battery. It's a manual, but I didn't roll it and pop the clutch - just used the starter. Not sure if it was just a freak of nature, new technology, or if Subaru does things differently, but it was interesting.

No doubt that a lot of older and simpler is better, but marketing guys need frills to sell stuff. A car is a car after all, so they need bells and whistles.

My F150 has the auto start/stop annoyance feature that I absolutely hate. Unless I press a button it shuts off unless the engine is really cold, the AC or heat is on, or the battery is low. Usually it tells me the battery is low and charging, so it keeps running, and I like it that way. I've read that Ford now makes the auto start/stop an option for the snowflakes in the liberal states, I assume.

Oh I agree. Electric parking brakes are a stupid idea.

I hate the auto start/stop. If it can’t be disabled I wouldn’t buy it.

My truck has power adjustable pedals with a switch right next to the parking brake. I've occasionally pulled the parking brake lever when I wanted to adjust the pedals and came to a screeching halt. I counted the buttons and switches on my truck once, and there were close to 100 on the dashboard and steering column.

Wife’s Subaru is like an aircraft cockpit with all the gadgets. I still remember not liking the idea of power windows because it was just something else to break.

My electric parking brake is integrated with the "hill holder" which holds the brakes set while the clutch is in and releases the brakes when the clutch is engaged. A nice feature, but I've only tried it a couple of times because I've been driving manuals for something like 50 years anyway. I could easily see people getting addicted to that and forgetting how to manage the brakes and clutch. Still it's handy on really steep hills with people who like to sit on your butt or when it's a long hill and you are forced to stop and start multiple times ... when I remember it's there. I certainly wouldn't let an electric parking brake option convince me one car is better than another.

I learned to drive in East Tennessee with a manual transmission. I remember being terrified on a hill if a car pulled up behind me. I haven't driven a stick in several years, but I wouldn't hesitate to jump behind the wheel of one and drive off.

That’s a good point. Most people don’t have any idea about manual transmissions and pull right up to your tail on a hill even if your pulling a trailer.

Left my lights on low recently and killed my battery. Luckily i was on a hill...even moreso that downhill was behind us. I told her to pay attention to how i did, talked through what i was doing as i rolled it down the hill and popped reverse to start it up without ever having to get out of the car. Pretty sure she thinks i am a wizard for that one. I have never in my life laid my eyes on anything...manmade, Created, etc that is as priceless as a "Daddy's Girl." She is the reason i still endure.

I have had them get up a foot or 2 on steep exit ramps etc so that now, when i am on a ramp like that...i watch my 6, and when a car starts coming up and gets about 50yds or so back from me, i let my car roll backwards intentionally 2 or 3 feet just to let em know to stay the Hell back. It works bout 80% of the time. For the other 20%, i just make sure not to roll backwards... I have been on hills so steep with a chump far too close and cheated by pulling up the Ebrake and not releasing it until i let the clutch out a touch, right when i could feel the wheels starting to pull me forward..and then quickly releasing the brake. I taught my daughter how to cheat like that too lol. Shes only 14 but she can drive my little Honda coupe.
