Given the rumors around the South Carolina disaster, losing an opportunity to play in the playoffs, the Hooker injury, and Banks not playing in the bowl game and the defense actually showing up, what’s your opinion on Jeremy Banks’ role in the derailment of this year?

I’ll always feel we missed out on something very special that doesn’t come along every day. Missed opportunity.

(PS. I am thrilled and grateful and pleasantly surprised to have had the year we had.)

Honestly, I'll think of him right alongside several other former Vols who just were just more trouble than they're worth. When they leave, you almost exhale in relief and at the same time, look forward to someone who will be the exact opposite.....talented, hard working, team first type. Really won't give him a lot of thought until the next problem child somehow works his way onto the roster. Then the comparisons will inevitably return. Hopefully, Heupel is able to week those types out and keep them to a rare, rare occurrence.

Already been beat to death in 10 threads. Banks is no longer there and it doesn’t matter now. Spilt milk. More interested in the young guys who showed out in the bowl game and in the new guys coming in. And also which DB’s are hitting the portal because they know they are fixing to get replaced.

He's done at Tennessee, so I'll just appreciate the plays he made. We don't know the full story of what happened before the South Carolina game. It's a team sport and there was no excuse to lose that game. I hate that some fans will keep trying to trash him and can't let it go.

He was a player whose career was over, given a very generous chance to atone and be better than that, played his heart out, then kind of reverted back to being someone not up to the rigor and expectations of his position. At the end of his tenure in Knoxville, he has been a true mixed bag.
He seems like a man whose angels and demons are in open warfare.

He doesn't seem to have a ton of self-awareness.

He lost me. I know he will play on the next level, but I’ll never cheer for him now. I lump Banks in the same category as Jalen Hurd for team chemistry damage.
Nothing like Hurd. Hurd quit on his team in the middle off a game. When called out on it he tried to play the tough guy until Jauan Jennings put him in his place. The Banks/Hooker situation is 100% on Heup. I love him as as a coach, but he mishandled that situation.

Can you say what Heup did or didn't do that makes you say he mishandled the situation? And, have we heard all the details?

You know what, Lady_Vol, I think you're one of the few who recognize a basic fact. Whatever happened with JB, we fans have only rumors to go by. That said, my personal opinion is to accept what his coach said. And not engage in damning JB to Hades and beyond on a rumor. For those who can't do that, it says a lot about how eager they are to judge and condemn our players. You can see it often here on VN. Josh Heupel addresses Jeremy Banks absence from Tennessee loss to South Carolina

As for his missing bowl game, it's his personal decision to make, as it does have potential financial consequences for him. But as you likely know, we have fans who presume to be celestial beings legally consigned to condemn players if they sneeze instead of coughing.

Wait for it, it's coming.

I think the reason the defense played better in the bowl game than it did in the SC game is time. The week if the sc game, our coaches had very little time to teach someone Bank’s roll in making the front calls. The bowl prep gave them a month.
As far as Banks legacy, in my mind he will always be a guy that could have been great, but he couldn’t get out of his own way. Could have been a great running back, couldn’t hang on to the ball. Could have been a great linebacker, made too many mental mistakes/ unnecessary ruffness penalties in big moments.
He will end up being a special teams guy in the nfl, because they will never trust his mental game to start at linebacker.

The OP was just asking for opinions. It’s time to move on but lot of downtime before next season.

From what I read, Hurd was lied to by Butch. Apparently that was a common theme. I have a hard time blaming Hurd. Butch never utilized him or Kamara right anyway. I don't really hold it against Banks either but he was a bone head always doing bone headed things.

I get the impression that, to his credit, Heupel will always take the diplomatic route; he will not publicly criticize his players or air "dirty laundry," so we probably will never know the facts of this matter.

Having said that, Coach Heupel will be able to use the South Carolina loss as a powerful teaching tool for many years to come, most notably with respect to the critical importance of team unity, maintenance of laser-like focus, regardless of the opponent, and the difficulty of winning on the road in the SEC. 'tis a painful lesson for our guys to experience, but, on the way back to the mountaintop, there will inevitably be such moments along the maturation pathway to consistently playing championship football.

I thought if he was as important to the defense as it seems, it was good of him to step aside for the bowl game so someone else could step up for next year. Instead of working him up for one more game we get double the preseason practices with his successor.

Huepel and Tim Banks didn't recruit or sign Banks to his role here at Tennessee, they inherited him and everything else that goes with that.

I'm not so sure Banks would have been academically eligible for the bowl game anyway this year, such that his decision to declare for the draft may have been made for him and he was simply making the best of a difficult situation, most talent with his projected draft position doesn't pass any opportunity to play and gather and garner additional exposure.
