Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

When they hired her, my first thought was that UT women's basketball was doing exactly what Alabama football did after Bear Bryant. You couldn't get the job unless you had some connection to Bear. Kellie Harper already had one shot at the big time at NC State and basically ran them down to mediocrity. I was around Raleigh when that was happening and it wasn't pretty. Then she gets fired, wins some games at a mid-major and she played for Pat Summitt, so she gets the job at Tennessee. No way that resume gets her the Tennessee job if not for the angle.

And she will probably turn this season around and get into the NCAAs this season. Probably will keep doing that for as long as they let her, like Holly did. But as long as "she played/worked for Pat" is the main criteria and not "get the best damn coach out there no matter where they came from," Tennessee isn't going to get back where they used to be.

Too much realism in this. Won’t be viewed as friendly but it’s accurate.

.....Kellie Harper already had one shot at the big time at NC State and basically ran them down to mediocrity.

I guess it defeats the purpose of your post to discuss what actually happened at NC State. Just too easy to say she got fired......

She has to turn the season around or coaches won’t have to negatively recruit against her this season so far is doing the job for them

This staff has to learn how to make the 3 ball an integral part of the offense. It would really open up the middle for Key and our slashers. The 3 ball can't just be something you shoot with 2 seconds left on the shot clock. We have people that can drain 3's if we work to get them a clean shot. This offense is so frustrating to watch. It's one on one and yes they may get an assist because they get stuck and have to pass the ball. There is no flow to it. It feels herky-jerky and spastic. I will still support the team 100% but they make me want to scream my head off.

I think it silly and a waste of energy to discuss the dismissal of Coach Harper at this point -in -time in history .This season should play out and see what happens .Then if the samo samo happens the rest of season as has been present for over three years then all bets should be off.

If she misses the NCAA tournament, which would be the first time the Lady Vols have missed in its history, if she isn’t fired then her seat would have to be scorching hot going into next season.

This team seems to be built around the drive to the basket at all cost mentality....Either you make the shot, or you get fouled...Forget we usually have 3 point shooters waiting on the perimeter for the kick out pass that never comes, they are an afterthought....

I've seen better offenses at a rec center with a pick up game among strangers to each other...It's almost like give me the ball and get out of my way, I'm going to the rim...It's one on one ball, or in many cases, our one against too many.

This season of promise is quickly turning into a season of broken dreams.....

Wow GT, this season so far seems to have really broke your spirit! 🥹 I get it! Let’s just hope they can turn it around soon! I think a win against Stanford will go a long way for this team. All we can do is hope!

My Dad used to call the Atlanta Hawks offense the black hole (not racial)
The ball would go into Dominique Wilkins and disappear.
Give Nique the ball and everybody clear out and see if he can score
Not the formula for winning then,,,and not the formula for winning now
The formula for winning is share the ball

Hang in there GT. It will get better. Try to avoid the Nega poison if you can.

Nothing wrong with being honest! No need to lower your standards GT, you can still be the same supportive, loyal fan and still value what you're seeing is not good.

Guys, this team has taken a lot out of me as a LV fan....It started the first game when Kellie watched her team get mauled for 18 straight points and never call a timeout to at least try and stop the other team's momentum....She just set there...I've never seen that type of coaching malpractice before....I'm sure that some of the players, that were on the floor being humiliated, have not forgot it either...

This offense reminds me too much of Holy's get the ball inside at all cost offense, that drove her into early retirement...Never saw so much outside shooting possibilities wasted, until what I'm seeing now by our current coach.....This formula cannot win consistently, and many of us know it...

Last game I watched Justine letting her teammates know she was open and ready to bomb/score a 3 ball, but she was just ignored for the drive to the rim, again and again philosophy/madness....We lost by 3 didn't we...

I mean no disrespect to anyone on this board, it's just having to accept knowing what will not work, is driving me a little more nuts than I already am.....The clock is about to strike 13 on this club, and I really hate it....

At one of Holly's practices I attended with my bride, after listening to Holly beret a girl for shooting a 3 ball (and making it), instead of going inside first, I leaned over and told my bride "we're toast" and we were too....

Another honest assessment

That report is pretty straight forward, but some of the posts above suggest there was more to the story. Did something else happen that only folks in the know are privy to?

You are who you are in recruiting

Harper also struggled to lure difference-making recruits who could help one of the league's most traditionally successful programs re-establish itself in a conference now controlled by Duke, Maryland and North Carolina.
