Good coaches don't need the best players to field a competitive team. With an offense like the vols have, we only need 3-4 stops a game. Everyone SC has played this year has managed that. Many with much less talent than is over there now. Many with recruiting ranks far below 20. I'd venture to guess some over 50.

I get that, but our talent has been lacking in the secondary for at least 2 years now. Each game is different, and it bit us. Last year, we beat UK 45-42.

Just don’t say anymore that we need players. We are playing DB’s ranked 500 and above. Two games out of 12 will be lost each year if that continues.

Players are also getting paid now. They wanted that. I love all of our players, but with that, more expectations come their way. Join the real world.

Some of this stuff can’t be reconciled if fans want it both ways.

To be fair to everyone you are arguing with, it wasn't just a "bad game"...it was a historically embarrassingly nightmarishly horrible defensive performance.

I realize they had improved before that, but that was just a massive massive pile of 💩 game plan.

I've got a question........did SC do something different with their offense Saturday?

A lot of talk about the secondary, but DL and blitz packages didn’t get any pressure either. We blitzed a lot in the 1st half and didn’t get home at all, that’s just asking to get beat

Defensive depth has to be the name of the game in this year's portal cycle for us.

I hope that Spyre can get the message out to the fans to get some more resources on that end.

I pray that Milton and the offense can look close to how efficient we've been. I don't want to worry about or have to think about offense this cycle. Aside from possibly bolstering OT, TE, RB.

Other than that we need bodies on defense. Monsters on the DL, brainiacs at LB, speed in the secondary. Any way that we can get them. The more the better.

it's the worst we've looked up front

at least in the Bama game Young had to run around to make plays. I can handle that. I don't know if Rattler could have done that.

He just sat back there like he was playing Madden on easy. Watching the whole play develop, standing still. Disgusting.

This is true. The fact the d line couldn't get pressure against that horrible Carolina offensive line played a big part. Overall the defense just played like complete and utter trash. Secondary was horrific but d line did them no favors

Right. Wouldn’t Garner deserve much criticism for that game like Martinez? Haven’t seen much of that.
DL got worked by USCe

We are fielding a competitive team. I think VolGee4 is right, though. In order to not just field a competitive team, but a team that can perform consistently week in and week out over a 12 game schedule, absorbing injuries, while competing for championships, you need to stack elite class on top of elite class. As I watched Saturday, it became apparent that we just don't have many true dudes that could truly take over when things started to break down. We have a lot of really good Division 1 athletes that are playing well in a system, but not many game wreckers that transcend the moment. We're only getting those if we can build coaching stability. If we're cycling coaches every two years, we'll consistently be where we are today, if not worse.

SC:
Punted once
Never attempted a FG
Made a pedestrian QB look like Mahomes. (Again)
Scored TDs on every drive but one
Their kicker is in the training room all week rehabbing a sore leg.

There is nothing competitive about that defense. Zero, nada. It's embarrassing to all defenses to call that a defense.

I've never understood why folks are so quick to blame the players who are largely unpaid and give the coaches who are paid millions a pass.

Because we realize even the greatest coaches have to have talent to win. We don't have talent in the secondary.

He does but to be fair the defensive line has been a stronger unit most of the year whereas the secondary has typically been the weaker link. After thinking over this game more, everyone on the defense deserves blame. It wasn't just one group that played poorly. It was the whole unit

I thought I heard in the game that USC OL was senior-laden with decent talent? Maybe not, I don't know. Don't care too much about this game anymore to check.

In order to fix a problem you have to root out the problem. Some of us are quicker to recognize what the problem is.

That SC has more 4* freshman DBs than we have total 4* DBs? That's a massive problem. That Pruitt failed to land talented corners outside of his first class?

What does SC defense have to do with our defense. We're not comparing our defense to theirs. We're comparing every other teams defense that was able to hold them in check to ours.

DL has been good all year.

They got owned by SC.
