What happened?? (Speculation encouraged)

What happened to our defense?? Banks didnt play. Offense wasn’t good either. Hooker kept underthrowing receivers. I know we gave up 24 to Mizzou last week but we turned it around. What happened today?
We lost and half our fanbase turned into a bunch of Nancies.

A recurring, lingering issue (having one of the worst pass defenses in all of FBS this season) finally came to a head.

I truly think SoCar prepared for 2-3 weeks for this game, because they knew this would be a signature win for the coaching staff.
It would also create a lot of buzz for their program and the recruiting trail.

That would explain why they looked so unprepared for UF last week.

Maybe when our offense is this good again… we take the ball first instead of deferring to quite their crowd and momentum! Perhaps SC was just going to have that type of game & it was just inevitable.

Tim Banks failed to prepare the defense...again and this time the Offense wasn't able to hide the at fact by being at home.

It was this. Nothing more than this. Also, I can’t tell if it’s just lack of talent or lack of coaching but our secondary was just plain bad last night. The worst performance of the season. Where’s the secondary that showed up against Kentucky??? I feel like Martinez is at least 85% of the problem here.

Since speculation is encouraged, I suspect some locker room cancer. Also, we’re not yet mentally tough enough to win on the road.

Excellent points - both true I'm afraid.

Plus, we don't yet have the roster manpower on defense to win on the road late in the season. Those guys looked mentally tired.

The locker room rumor appears to have legs. Jr. thug Jeremy Banks shows his lack of character, once again, by initiating a physical confrontation with Hendon Hooker in the locker room this week.
Rumor is this created a team division between the defense and offense. So our mature defensive players decided to handle it by intentionally playing soft. Making Jeremy Banks your emotional leader was dumb of these guys to begin with. So ........ did our defense actually throw this game as some sort of protest over Banks being suspended ?? Surely not. But so many high school & college age kids these days are so emotionally immature, this possibility would not shock me. That's not Dale Jones or Tim Priest out there on defense for this team.

Yall are better than this assumption. Please tell me the above is a joke right ? Look I don't believe in Banks either but this is not the way to say it.
Nah, I think the defense has looked really amazing at times during the season and picked up the slack for the offense in a few games, (I think at one point we were all concerned Golesh and Banks would get poached) last night was just bizarre

In 2 years ago we have gone from 3 - 7 to 7 - 6, hopefully to a 11-2 season. Find anywhere in UT history where a program has turned around this quickly. Let's not take Vanderbilt lightly, they are very capable of giving us everything we can handle. Hopefully SC game was a wake up call.

Banks showed improper shower etiquette and didn’t travel with the team. Look, at the moment, the people that are getting paid to handle the situation (the coaches) know what truly happened, and that’s all that matters. At this point, I trust their judgement until they give me a reason not to. The defense has been like a tire with a nail in it. It’s leaked all year, some days more than others. Eventually, we all knew it would blow out, and it did at exactly the wrong time. There are no such things as moral victories, but there are such things as growing pains. This is one of those.
