I think they should eliminate the championship game; though they won't because it makes too much money. But 12 regular season games, championship game, and potentially 4 playoff games, 17 games is too many games for a college team.

For the other conferences this made perfect sense because they didn’t have enough depth for their conference championship game to be helpful. The only way it helped those conferences would be to have the top 2 teams play, no mater who they are because those are single bid leagues. In the SEC, where 2 is a real possibility ever year and there’s even talk of 3 this year, it would only hurt the chances of getting multiple teams. Take this year. If UT and UGA play that means LSU is definitely out and, if UT loses they are definitely out. Doing away with divisions would be horribly stupid for the SEC and I’m sure they will see the same thing once they sit down and think about it.

Edit: Of course this is with a 4-team playoff. If the 12-team playoff happens (and that appears certain) it’s less impactful but I do still think it can do some harm. Again, looking at this year it could hurt your number 2 team but help your number 3. Then the question is, would a 3-loss LSU make it? Maybe not but of course Bama would be in. Anyway, it’s less harmful with a 12-team playoff.

When the SEC first started the conference championship, I thought that would be the case. It has not proven to have an adverse effect. If anything, it may have actually helped to get two teams in.

I think u would still have a Conference Championship Game. It would be like the Pac with the highest 2 win percentages playing for the title. The problem with this is how do u keep the schedule fair. We have too many teams for everyone to play each other. Somebody is gonna end up playing UT, Bama, Georgia, Fla, LSU, Texas, OU, or OM in some combination, while someone else pulls Vandy, Mizzou, Jr, KY, & State.

If we ditched divisions, to keep some parity in scheduling I think you'd probably have to get rid of permanent rivals, and only schedule conference games one year out. Take the previous year's standings, and build schedules off of that. Like this year, say Georgia finishes 1, Tennessee 2, LSU 3, Alabama 4, down through A&M and Vandy at 13 and 14. You build an eight game conference schedule (or nine, or whatever) for the next season so that everyone's point totals are loosely the same when you add up their opponents' previous year finish. So you get something like:

Georgia plays: Tennessee (2), Alabama (4), Ole Miss (5), Kentucky (7), Arkansas (9), South Carolina (10), Texas A&M (13), Vandy (14) - 64 points
Tennessee plays: Georgia (1), LSU (3), Florida (6), Mississippi State (8), South Carolina (10), Auburn (11), Missouri (12), Texas A&M (13) - 64 points

And so on.

Tennessee is good again, so Alabama no longer has an easy win from their cross-division rival baked into their schedule. Instead, it's likely to become a probably loss. That's a problem.

Unpopular opinion: Get rid of all permanent opponents. Just because we have played someone doesn't mean we always should. I know tradition is important for a lot of people, but so is a level playing field.

The current scheduling format is absurd. Playing a road game every 14 years against western division teams not named Alabama is ridiculous. Moving to a nine game conference schedule and having three permanent opponents allows you to play home and away against every other program every four years.
