Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

I would LOVE to see what White would do in hiring a women's basketball coach which, by the way this season is trending, may be sooner than later...

Why don't you tell us who (give us two or three to ponder) he should hire in your esteemed opinion, since you think it a likely reality, and since you think the last search was botched?

You can have an opinion on my posts. You can like it, disagree, agree somewhat, lightly disagree whatever… I didn’t really ask for your opinion. But you seem willing to keep coming back to them. I’m a fan just like everyone else here…our fans reach far and wide. I don’t agree with everyone, I agree with a lot of post…the beauty of being a free thinker.

The ONLY reason I kept coming back was to refute your accusations otherwise, I would never have said anything when you barged into and took over this thread. This wasn'T about you but you made it about you. Congratulations!

I will have an opinion and will state it when I want. I expect no less from anyone else.

Sorry about the punch bowl reference. It apparently ruffled your feathers and, as I have learned from reading your posts, that takes little effort to do.

You understand that’s an AD in front of cameras? He’ll spin it in a positive. We’ve been down the coach introductions enough to know they won’t say “ coach XYZ was our cheapest and 8th offer”

So it WASN'T that she was a LVFL, it was for money? Make up your mind, please, If you believe the hire was made because of constraints of money, why are you incessantly caterwauling about how the hire was made only because she was an LVFL?

And you like to cherry pick the things that he said you want to shove at me as gospel truth, and then discount the other things he says as fibs if they don't support your grassy knoll theories and blue hair conspiracies.

It’s was her market value, being the former player helped the cause.

Whatever. Actually at the time it was about turds in a punchbowl but let people read the posts. It's pretty clear what happened. Feel free to continue with this exchange if you want. I'm going to do something else but if you want to continue......

Now we're finally getting somewhere. I believe her starting base pay was 750 grand per year. Do you know how that compared to the rest of market in that year? I.e. - how much were the established P5 coaches who might have come here making in that year? Take Jeff Walz, for example?

Last word? Go Vols!

Factor in her experience and pay before you want to start with the Jeff Waltz. She’s at 800K now and he’s at 1.5M with roughly 6-7 years less experience as a HC if my memory is correct. So again, market value

Walz has been a head coach for 15 years. He was making 1.5 million or so when he was a finalist for the Mississippi State Job (around the time Harper was hired here), along with Nikki McCray - a LVFL who was making 200K at Old Dominion. Guess who they chose? So , did MS St hire McRay for the lower salary or the fact she was a LVFL?

I'm guessing that Fulmer got what he could get for the salary he could offer - given the state of the money at the time - and sold it as a hire of a LVFL, and hoped for the best. And I've got no problem with that. And I don't know why you or anyone else does.

1. Not a MS State fan, so let’s stay here and not get sideways. But wish her well and wish she had been able to stay on.
2. You have no problem with “hope for the best”’as I expect more “than hope for the best” in our hires

Man, you are impossible to converse with. I bet I'm not the only person who says that. I've got no problem with what he did for the reasons he did it, not whether he hoped for the best. I've got no problem with him hoping for the best after the hire. And it has nothing to do with whether you're a MS St fan or not. Geez. I was just giving a comp to illustrate the salary squeeze Fulmer was in at a time of low cash flow at UT: a Jeff Walz type - i.e someone who was a proven winner at p5 level who might have been interested in the UT job - cost 2 times the amount Fulmer was willing to pay, so he chose someone at half that who was the best candidate for that salary. That isn't "getting it sideways". That's called analyzing the situation and coming to a conclusion. Sheesh.

It’s not impossible, just not the answers you want. You stated you had no problem, doesn’t mean I have to have that same view.

Getting sideways is asking a question and then going in another direction. MS St hiring process is not my concern. Much like Duke or any other place that has former Vols coaching.

Let’s not fool ourselves two high school recruiting classes and you can only recruit one high schooler, does not help your program. Now I feel Justine is a potential outstanding recruit, but I believe we need a mixture of HS and portal recruits. I would like to see a little more of Justine because the little I have seen of her, appears to be a baller. I am also interested to see what KJH does at the upcoming tournament. I am interested in how she solve the outrebounding issues, a more consistent performance on both ends of the court. She has three very good players in Jackson, Powell and Horston, it should be easy to come up with four or five players who can complement these three players. KJH might have to realize that she can’t run players in and out as she pleases. She has to realize that what worked at the mid college level is simply not going to work consistently at the power 5 level. One of the keys to winning is deciding that what you are doing isn’t working and a change of strategy is necessary.

if not attitude, what then?

I believe turnovers will reduce as the players learn how to play with each other. No one wants to make a turnover so I don't see attitude as an issue. I fully anticipate some turnovers from athleticism on both sides and game speed. 11 turnovers per game is top 20. We are at #297 with an average of 20.7 turnovers per game. Not doing as well on rebounding either at #153 with 39.33 rpg. Top 20 is 49 rpg. I would be more inclined to believe attitude was affecting rebounding though.

I rest my case.

Last year the team played all year together and never reduced their turnovers. I am not saying the team has a bad attitude, I am saying that reducing turnovers are not the players main concern.
