Today was long, and it ended in an interesting way.
We had an "away" scholastic bowl match up the road.
I took the county's Explorer because I was taking six players.
We got there, and the restrooms were unisex at that school.
Neither my students/players nor I had ever experienced this in a school setting.
Because I drove and we were not on a bus, of course they wanted to discuss this whole situation on the way home. All of us were a little freaked out.
I mean, I had to go in there to #1 and there was a girl in there I didn't know (from that school) talking about needing another tampon, and I heard another one say she would just get her one out of the machine.
A couple of the females on the way home talked about how uncomfortable it would be for a teenage girl with a bad time of the month, which I was able to identify with that because of my youngest daughter's situation.
Surely in that situation something could be done to avoid the humiliation.
At the end of the day, I have to say I'm glad my students always seem to be comfortable talking to me. It's always been this way. But tonight was the first time I think it's ever gotten really "awkward." And I've been doing this for many years.
