The Atlanta Braves

According to ESPN game 1 will be Wright vs. Bassitt and game 2 will be Morton vs. DeGrom. No starters listed for game 3 but I’m guessing it’s going to be Strider vs. Scherzer
They said early in the TV broadcast tonight that it could line up for Fried, Wright, and Strider to start against the Mets. I don’t recall the order. FWIW.

That would be better. Still probably going to have to beat DeGrom and Scherzer. More than likely going to have to face them again in the playoffs too so let’s go!!!

We need to sweep them. They only need to win one game to win the season series, which would be the first tie breaker.

Who you think should win the MVP, Ohtani or Judge?
I’m biased, but Judge. Now leads for the Triple Crown and is 1HR away from tying the AL record.

Team is actually in contention (who he’s had to carry the second half) and not in 4th place in their division

I see the Judge side of it, I do. But for me it’s Ohtani. Really good hitters come around every few years. But a really good hitter/pitcher is a unicorn.

It's a classic "best player" versus "player most valuable to his team" debate.

The best player is Ohtani. He's an All Star if he had just his hitting stats or just his pitching stats and he's got both. For all intents and purposes, it is unprecedented what he is doing.

The most valuable player is Judge because the Yankees do not lead the AL East with anything less than the incredible numbers he's put up. The Angels are a joke with or without Ohtani. However, to what degree do you hold that against him?

I gotta go with Judge. Ohtani has had a season for the ages, doing things as a pitcher and hitter that have never been done before, but Judge still beats him in WAR and the tiebreaker for me is that the Yankees wouldn’t be in the playoffs without Judge and the Angels aren’t making the playoffs with Ohtani.

They'd likely be in the playoffs, but as a Wild Card. Judge certainly has had a bigger impact on his team than Ohtani has, but that is mostly because the Angels suck, which Ohtani obviously has no control over. Judge is in a position to have a bigger impact on his team because of something outside his control; namely, his team was better to begin with, which put him in a position to single-handedly push his team into a division title. Ohtani, no matter how good of a season he had, wasn't getting his team into the playoffs.

And this is where the debate kind of veers off for me. Words and phrases like ‘unprecedented, season for the ages, hitherto undreamt of’ and things are all used to describe Ohtani. But in the next sentence it’s followed by, ‘but no, he doesn’t deserve an award for it, it should go to the guy on the playoff team.’

I honestly think it should go to Ohtani. I've interpreted MVP awards more of a "best player" thing even though it is literally called "most valuable player." Ohtani, because his team sucks, does not have a chance to get his team over the top and into the playoffs or into a division title. It never has made sense to me to hold that against a player. He cannot control that.

Ohtani is having a season whose only precedent is a past season by him. Don't you, almost by definition, have to give the award to him?
