Only way to go to college. Parents drilled into my head I had to go to college. I know now that is a lie but I sure didn't then.

Banks wouldn't give a 17 year old with no real job a mortgage loan, they'd laugh in your face. So why is it different for student loans? Because its a scam.
Yep. It sure is. Still doesn't mean you should be forgiven at MY expense.

I have been paying my student loans for almost 10 years now, the balance has gone up almost 20k. I'm on the "pay on time for 25 years and we'll forgive the rest" plan. 10k is a drop in the bucket and really doesn't even effect me.
You admit this openly? You really are a socialist

"FORCED" who held a gun to your head to force you to take out a loan for tuition? I worked a night shift job and went to school days to pay my tuition. But now all these lazy a$$ fu##ers getting their's paid off by me and the rest of the taxpayers.
It's interesting how many of us had that word 'forced' jump off the page at us in his post. That was the first thing I thought of commenting on.

I wonder if his payments at the rooms to go store will ever be paid off too.

Anybody that says anybody else was FORCED to take a loan likely has the average IQ of a Somalian.

And now that I see who posted the original post I am once again less than surprised.

And what about the kids buried in debt that will never be able to own a house because their parents lived paycheck to paycheck and they were forced to take out loans for tuition? Not really having a clue at the time (because 17 years old) exactly how long it would take to pay those loans back?

Don’t take out loans you can’t afford to pay?

College life has become a complete scam.

All this money for “education” has created this arms race. Building nicer dorms, amenities, dining, etc. it is like a 4 year country club visit for young adults.
Having just moved my eldest into his dorm, I can vouch for this. He has a living room, full refrigerator, individual bedroom and own bath (both of which are very nice). The cafeteria resembles something you might find at a nice all-inclusive resort and has freshly-prepared food options of multiple cuisines. There is a coffee bar, a market, and a game room with a real pool table, ping pong, and about an 80 inch TV.

I asked when I get to come hang out.

It's now a lot easier to see why in-state cost has risen from $4k to $27k per year between my and his freshman years.

Lazy?

There are plenty of options available for kids to get a quality college education with little to no debt. I just can’t bring myself to feel sorry for the kids who won’t take advantage of them.
Sure is. Not everyone is entitled to the “college experience”, but there are a lot who think they are and saddle themselves with a mortgage payment out of college to get it.

How do we fix it? I agree that is an arms race among schools to fight for government money. Is it as simple as cutting off all federal student loans and going to scholarships or grants only?

Drastically reduce the government money available.

I’d be for complete elimination. But that is a dream world.

We’ve just seen how this can now be used to literally purchase votes, out in the open.

I talked to a guy that worked for Kroger last night. He said they are apparently having supply chain issues and I'm not the only one that asked about it last night. The potatoes they do have are small bags with very small potatoes. No Russet or baking potatoes.
It has been that way here for a couple months. Usually there is one good size potato in the bag and the rest kinda sad little fellas. I was hoping it would make me skinnier, but sadly it did not.

The guy I share an office with tested positive for the vid this morning. My wife went to get some Theraflu just in case and wow!!!! Hardly any available and $7.

There have been things missing for over a year in the store and just remains an empty spot on the shelf. Everything costs more.

My house can use some piers. I got a quote early in 2021 for the work but held off because of the cost. I called the guy back recently and the cost is up 35%. I asked if he thinks material costs will ever go down again. He said he's not purchasing but he doesn't think so. Most of this inflation is here to stay. Combine that with supply chain issues. Those 1st world problems people used to joke about a couple of years ago...we are now resembling a country on the downside when you combine the disappearance of sovereignty and lawlessness.

Yes, and because these schools have built massive fixed costs you'll bankrupt a ton of them.

I worked two jobs and graduated debt free. Not much of a "college experience" but I got it done. Military is another option to get college paid for, and I wish I would have done that instead.

It can be done without loans or with lower loans offset by other means. Anyone that says otherwise is flat wrong.
Flat wrong, lazy, or stupid. Or maybe all of the above.

I bought 20 2x4x8’s the other day and it was $125.

Of course it doesn't affect you, you never intended to pay the loans you took!

4 years at UT as member of TN Army National Guard….free tuition
4 years Med school on army health profession scholarship…free tuition and educational expenses plus stipend
5 years army residency.

No debt. But now I get to help pay off everyone else’s.
