You are correct. I have seen this cause a major fight on a fishing board.
I am pretty sure Providence has nothing to do with it.
It also works for "you all have not."

The apostrophe notes missing letters, as in you all -> y’all. There are no missing letters between ‘a’ and ‘ll’ in ‘you all have not’.
