Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Went to an FCA banquet a few years ago, the keynote speaker was a D lineman that played for the Vikings back in the 70's. He told a story about breaking his wrist at the end of the season but was still selected to the pro-bowl. He decided to play because an o-lineman he didn't like was selected to play and it would be the last time he would have a chance to hit him for awhile.
Jack Youngblood broke his leg in the 1979 divisional playoffs, but still played the rest of the playoffs, in the SB, and even in the Pro Bowl.

There were big men that could shoot the ball back in the day. Sam Perkins and Laimbeer come to mind. The game was just different back then and players like Hakeem and Ewing first priority was to get points in the post, get rebounds and play the best defense they possibly could. There are highlights of both of them handling the ball very well.

Take a look at some of these plays by Ewing and how athletic he was back in the day.

I remember this era like it was yesterday. Ewing was an absolute beast.

They didn't get paid much back then so every game check counted but I do believe they did love the game more than a lot of the players today.

I heard Dan Reeves speak once and he told a story about going to Landry and telling him he was retiring because he made more money in his off-season job selling cars than he did playing football and he had another kid on the way. Landry made him a coach-player so he could pay him a little more and that's how he got into coaching.

Best players that Never Won a title.

Reggie Miller
Patrick Ewing
John Stockton
Karl Malone
Charles Barkley
Dominique Wilkins
Dikembe Mutombo
Allen Iverson
George Gervin
Bernard King
Steve Nash

Who else you got?
Chris Paul will probably be on this list once he calls it quits.

Off topic, but I look forward to the day Jerry Jones no longer owns the Cowboys so I can cheer for them again. I grew up a Cowboys' fan, but I can't stand Jerry Jones.

100% agree. I liked him at first but when he let Jimmy go after winning BTB superbowls he lost me.

Yep, that's when I left. He couldn't stand that Jimmy was getting all the credit (rightfully so) so they "parted ways". And truthfully, I hated how he handled firing Tom Landry.
Not a Cowboys fan but it was nice to see Jim Jeffcoat and Bill Bates get their Super Bowl rings. Longtime Falcon Scott Case went to the Cowboys and got one as well.

I also believe Jeffcoat is the only player in history who had 100 or more career sacks and never made the Pro Bowl.

I don't think Mutombo was that good...

Not compared to the talent in the league at the time.

I can see that as a valid argument. IIRC he had double digits in REBs and points over a decade. There was also a four year span when DM averaged 4 blocks a game. He definitely wasn't Shaq, Hakeem, or Ewing but was still a force. He won many accolades too.
Edit: Looks like I was off on his stats a tad. Still good numbers during his prime.
