I asked the tech guy what could've been the root cause he said it could've gotten too hot at installation when they were welding nearby or it could've just been partially bad. It's hard to say. Suck it up and move on. Listen learned on the warranty. I'll at least more strongly consider cost - benefit in assessing risk.

I trust HVAC repair guys as far as I can throw them. I have taken it on myself to learn as much as I can about all things HVAC and there is no way some ass wipe is going to lie to me and get away with it.

I keep motor start capacitors for the blower, fan, and compressor on hand. Those are the failures I've had most. I've got Traine heat pumps at both houses and have replaced a small circuit board that controls the blower motor on both - same issue both times which is a resistor on the board (part of the blower relay) overheats, damages the board, and screws up the solder connection. I've got both boards which I can repair, but with standing the resistor off and trying to minimize the heat damage. Like you; I'm not fond of calling somebody to repair my AC and heating unit.

The other one is garage doors and openers. Right now the tensioner on my garage door (Wayne Dalton - not the normal type springs) broke and my car is trapped in the garage. After the weekend when the predicted stormy weather goes away, I'll deal with that. But trying to lift a heavy garage door with no counter balance and no handle isn't something I'm looking forward to. The Wayne Dalton tensioner springs are in the $200+ range. Seems like it's always something.

Start/run caps and contactors/relays are the only issues I’ve ever really had. Only one occasion where I’ve had a condenser coil spring a leak and that was over 15 years ago. Never have had an issue with a fan, blower, or compressor motor.
 
@VolStrom are you camping at Tim’s Ford this weekend? I ask because the guy next to us is a crusty old fart in a class A and when I said “how ya doing” when he was setting up his response was “****ing Biden, cost me an extra hundred dollars to get here”. His wife is kinda hot for a 60 or so woman.

Shouldn't it be Tim's Fjord? Or is that not allowed with so many Fords and Chevrolets?

I stuck with the standard warranty. 10 year parts 1 year labor. Little did I know the labor is the major cost. When it's late July and your air is out you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. I had just had a tune-up within the last two weeks. I am always suspicious but what do you do. I was able to get a 2nd quote for the issue and the price was comparable. $1200 - $1300 minus maintenance agreement discount put me under $1000.
I had my heat pump replaced around this time about 3 years ago. My air handler is in the garage and I happened to walk out there to check on the progress about the time the guy was brazing the line set. He took the time to explain to me what the TXV valve did and when he brazed the line near it, he had some sort of heat sink he clamped on the line before the valve and also put a wet towel around the valve.

I've found that if you can find an independent guy that owns his own business and actually works out of their own shop, you can't beat them. $1000 for a hundred dollar valve and an hour or 2 of labor sounds excessive to me.
