Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

That’s been my hesitation on getting one. What I need is a solenoid that shuts off the hot water to the kids bathrooms.

What was kinda cool in my apartment in Germany was how the tankless water heater also ran the heat in the house. I had the radiator type heaters with the pipes running under the floor. As long as you walked in certain places the tile floor wasn't cold.

While the radiators had "temperature control" knobs, they only ranged between "off" and "ninth circle of hell." I actually had to crack open windows in the winter just to keep it reasonable.

Got a question for you truck guys. My car can swallow long flat stuff like bed frames and at least a queen headboard that my wife's CR-V won't handle, but the trunk opening is limited and bulky stuff just won't go. I've been thinking a truck if gas prices stay high and conditions drive down truck prices. Anyway this last week while at my other house, I went over to talk to my brother in law, and his old truck is still sitting in his drive ... he has a 2 or 3 year old F-150. So I mentioned if he was in the mood for selling his old truck which turns out to be an '07 or '08 F-150 to let me know. And then for good measure, I told my sister - sneaky move because wives want husbands to get rid of stuff we have a hard time parting with.

The truck looks great, has the cab with front and rear seats which means the shorter bed. I really want it for the trips to Lowes or wherever and to move stuff between houses - stuff I can manage, and occasionally stuff like plywood. Am I wasting my time even if I get a good price on a good truck with the short bed? It's intended for the utility; I'll normally drive my car. From what I see on the road you'd almost swear that pickups with a regular beds are like dinosaurs.

I haven't looked lately or done a real thorough search, but I did actually look for solenoid controlled water valves about a year ago. I wanted to be able to flip a switch as I left the other house and shut off the water, but I didn't find anything that made much sense to me. The concept is simple - they are used all over in industrial applications, but a lot of them (like everything else these days) have internet connectivity - not interested, and they all seem to be ridiculously priced. I'm going a different route and just put the shutoff valve so that it is accessible from inside the house. Turns out when I mentioned it to my other brother in law, he does that in houses he builds. Hopefully later this year when we do some other stuff, we'll reroute the water line and put a valve just below the floor where there's an access panel to get to bathtub plumbing - just an easy open and turn off the water manually. Not as nice as a solenoid operated valve - but simple and reasonable and not iffy, gimmicky, connectable stuff or expensive industrial grade.

I’m assuming it’s a 6’ bed and not the 41/2?

Probably. It didn't look extremely short, but just not like the older trucks before the second row of seats became popular.
My tundra has 6 foot bed. I have no problems hauling anything. Even the occasional 4x8 sheet rock or plywood with the tail gate down.

So like I said just above for F-150 I think it depends on the cab. They had two frames a short and long. Long frame regular cab would be 8’ bed. Super Crew (a true 4 Dr) with short frame I want to say was 5’ hogg thought it was 4.5’ but I don’t remember one that short. There were a couple of other options in between.

Like others have said, it is likely a 6ft bed or very close to that. For 8 foot plywood no need to even drop the tailgate but you can...for the occasional 10 or 12ft pieces of trim like casing or baseboards, or even 12ft 2x4s and 2x6s, all you have to do is drop the tailgate so you are supporting 8 feet of that...throw a ratchet strap on it...and a free plastic red flag 🚩 from lowes to keep you from getting pulled over. I have a had 1 truck with a longbed 8ft and 2 trucks with 6ft shortbeds...never missed the other 2 feet. For a homeowner a shortbed f150 is more than enough truck. If and when i get another truck it will probably be a Nissan Frontier. My dad had the v6 version and my Pappaw the big 2.4 or 2.5liter 4 cylinder...they were both great. I hauled the entire deck package for a 12x16ft deck in 1 load...in the 4cylinder. Joists, decking boards, posts, 2x4s and pickets. The entire deck list....it drove like i was carrying a washing machine or something. I was very impressed. Anyway...good luck and GO VOLS
