Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

In Phoenix right now it's 103 degrees and it feels like it's 103 degrees (9% humidity - relatively high for here). It's only 1:41pm here right now. It's supposed to get up to 106 today.
Yeah my sister texted me from Sante Fe. 87 with 7%.

Next Thursday we are supposed to break triple digits officially. With most days at 95.

Ugh...only mid June. August will be unreal.

I remember in Chattanooga about 20 years ago it was triple digits for like 2 weeks..something like that. Hottest summer ever.

2020 was the hottest year on record in Phoenix (dating back to 1895 when they began keeping records). Check out these fun stats:

I wonder how Death Valley looks.

Had to go through MCAS El Toro once. Will never forget the bank temp sign said 112. Real temp, not heat index.

Summer of '86, was doing some active duty flying for a reserve squadron at Millington (that's how I paid for grad school). For 5 straight days the high was 100 with humidity at 90%. On the last day I flew out for an overnight in the Bay Area. The next morning when I walked out of the VOQ it was 76 degrees with 20% humidity. I felt like I could run to the Sierras and back.

Feels better than here. I had a picture of us visiting when it was reading 120 on their screen. Flew back to Atlanta and was ready to go back.

The heat being dry there hits you, but not in the soul sucking way humidity does.
I agree. This is my favorite place I've ever lived. You just have to make sure that you stay hydrated out here. Your body is actually sweating a lot, but the humidity is so low that the sweat evaporates off your skin and you don't realize how much you're sweating. That is a major problem for out-of-state hikers, for instance. They go out hiking without water, and then they end up having to be rescued because they get heat stroke.

You can get out of a pool in the summer when it's about 117 degrees here, and you will freeze your butt off for a couple of minutes. The water super evaporates off your skin so fast that it gives you the chills.

Woof. I just got one of those totally unexpected phone calls. Can I be at the hospital by 6AM tomorrow for a heart procedure. They implant a device in the heart to block off the left atrial appendage as a means to stop clots from forming during atrial fibrillation. It means getting off blood thinners within a few months, so I'm going for it - just didn't expect it to be so sudden. I've been in a randomized trial but without the device (Watchman); had a bleeding problem a few weeks ago so apparently that flipped my status.

Keep us posted. Dr Love or he retired?

Good luck! Check back in and let us know how you're feeling afterward.

I'm on blood thinners too (Xarelto). I threw what the doctors described as DVT's behind the knee along with massive pulmonary emboli (lungs completely filled with pulmonary emboli, including a saddle embolism) back in 2011 while recovering from a fractured ankle. Then, I threw additional clots (portal vein thrombosis and thrombosis of the superior mesenteric vein) in 2021 a couple months after getting the JNJ covid vaccine. Now, I'm on blood thinners for life.

My sister had clots - her lungs also after ankle surgery. The left atrial appendage looks like a little stub on the left atrium where blood can pool and clot. The Watchman looks a little like an umbrella that closes it off, skin grows over the device and basically gives the atrium smooth walls so the blood doesn't get a chance to enter a stagnant area and clot. The success rate in preventing strokes is apparently up in the 90% range, so I'm all for doing it. Timing was a big surprise though.
