They don't
My former employer even had a fall protection tower for people to jump off of to "get the feel" of falling and having a real life experience. To be honest, I can't remember all of the stupid crap that was required to adhere to OSHA regulations. I just remember the 4 foot rule, personal lift wear a harness, but a scissor lift no harness required. I'm sure you can find a retired former safety guy that would love to teach this class.

Because we only build apartments and OSHA in NC inspects nearly every project qe build, the GCs that we work for keep and in-house safety dbag on each job all day long every single fecking day to do nothing on Earth except sit in their car with binoculars or walk around taking pictures of completely miniscule and often fictitious bullcrap ALL DAY LONG.

We got "cited" but not fined twice today. Have had $7000 worth of fines though in 4 months on this job. (Am done framing the complex now, just have punch, a few decks, and half the inspections left). These clowns HAVE TO FIND something every single day to shoot out emails about (look boss, i am working!) Just to justify the pay they are given for doing absolutely nothing. If i see this clown off site...walmart, restaurant etc...i will beat on him til i get tired. I have to listen to his BS every day and "cooperate" with him, but he knows the score. I bet he lives in a bunker. 1 of our framing crews was fined 18,000 dollars by him on a recent project. My amigo actually tried to bribe the bastard halfway thru...said he would pay him $500 a month cash under the table to just go ruin another subs day every dang day.

Anyway...cited twice today.

1st one...730 am my siding guys are carrying tools thru the buildng from the parking lot to set up for the day. Guy makes 1st trip, turns around and walks out of the unit to cross the 15 feet or so to his truck without a hardhat. Compressors not running yet, saws not cutting, guys not yet actually working. He takes a pic of my guy, writes him up, sends email to everyone except publishers clearinghouse with photos etc like he just discovered the first vagina in recorded history.

2nd one- get a call bout 3pm to come all the way back to building 1...the 1st one we built, already framed roofed, sided, etc...and at the 2nd floor opening at the front of the breezeways we framed arch shaped knee walls (picture a rainbow coming up from the breezeway floor at the front of the building where a handrail would normally be...10 feet wide radius whose center point comes up 38inches above the floor, where it intersects each wall on either side it is 30inches high. So it has 8inches of crown in 10 feet so to speak,) well...handrails on apartments and commercial buildings arent 36in high like residential by OSHA code, they have to be 42in with an intermediate rail at 21in high. So after we built these arches, we had to install a temporary 2x4 handrail horizontally just over the top of the radius wall at 42inches AFF. Just to be there until the aluminum permanent rail is installed by others. We installed them, finished all of our scope in B1 and i have already passed all inspections. This jackleg calls me down there, says my siding guys are responsible for maintaining that 2x4 rail (the painters took 1 down today but are conspicuously absent now) and cites my siding guys....again...email etc etc i hope he chokes to death on his own vomit and dies in a portajon. Tomorrow.

Heres the thing: the GC has a scale for (,even fake) safety infractions. The siding guys burned 2 out of their 3 freebies for this entire job TODAY bc this guy is so full of sheit. They get 1 more free citation, the next 3 are $1000 each. Numbers 4,5,6 are $3000 each. Then they conitinue to go up. We are wrapping up siding on bldg2 right now. There are 8 more buildings. 16 men crew so about a week and half per bldg. Thats 3 months, but i just got word today there are gonna be supply chain delays for my exterior doors which will slow them down. These guys will lose a lot of $ by the time we are done here. Their safety is great. Never, ever have to tell 1 of them to check their PPE or to tie off, replace handrail....nothing. This bastard will mill them (,and us) probably another $20k just off my siding guys. Makes me look bad to some who dont know the situation...makes the PM and lead Super for the GC look bad...makes my company look bad. All because this sorry motorscooter (who frequently brags about being the "highest paid hourly worker," on the GCs payroll) all so this sorry bastard can look like he is doing something. He literally does absolutely nothing for 8 hours and 45 minutes of a 9 hour shift every day. I have to be careful to not actually hate this guy. I joke about him dying etc but honestly it is really testing my faith. I have a 12 hour OSHA certificate. I am a ,"competent person/supervisor". We work very safe even though its a real pain in the butt sometimes. But this guy gets off on ruining this job for the subs that actually do all the work. Just a terrible human being....and yes. He would do it for free. I guarantee he would love to be the center of attention for the only time in his entire life, again , under forced circumstances for everyone in attendance. A common sense safety guy helps me keep my guys safe and is appreciated. A cancerous boil on the azz of humanity like this clown does nothing but spread misery and inspire negative feelings.

Feel better? Might I suggest you purchase him a tablet with cellular service, with VN preloaded to come up to "the Girls of" Threads along with "Funny Pictures" and Political Meme's - he should be able to find Pornhub on his own. This should keep him busy for 3 or 4 weeks.
I might also suggest you get together with all the other contractors on the job and agree to a "minor" but obvious violation where you each only have to pay a couple $K in fines so he looks good.

As a kid Cascade Hollow Rd was the greatest place on earth for me. My great grandparents owned the land directly across from the distillery and my grandparents lived further down closer to Normandy.
Beautiful area full of history.

I'll have to check Cascade Hollow Rd one day - looks nice. I used the Tullahoma/Normandy road when going to my father in law's home on the other of Normandy; Cascade Hollow would have been an interesting alternate. I also used to turn off 55 between Manchester and Tullahoma and take back roads to Normandy. Always nice just getting off main roads and driving through the country.

One benefit of my job and the territories I have had between Bham, Nashville, Knoxville and Atlanta..I have been on so many backroads.
I remember as a newbie in 96 covering North Alabama, I went and bought all sorts of maps. After a couple of years, I knew every knook and cranny, road name, short cut, alternate
When I moved to Houston, I could be 5 miles from home and without GPS would of struggled to get home.

I bought a Lectric XP 2.0 bike and have been ripping it around the neighborhood the last few days. I'm amazed at how much fun an old guy can still have on an electric bicycle and get a good workout at the same time. I always come home breathing hard.

EB's are awesome. Rode one in neighborhood few years ago turned around in the circle at like 50% power assist and felt like Iron man. Ohhh, so this is the sensation of a world class athlete

I have some pretty good hills in my neighborhood and my old ass would have walked up most of them on a regular bike, the power assist of an ebike makes it tolerable. I'm thinking the more I ride it, the less power assist I'll use. So far it was money well spent.

Exercise at moderation to ones ability. Or just plain fun and a little exercise. The power assist variation is just fantastic. Get too tired and just throttle her home.
I was checking out some off road versions...well because I still have that dirt bike in me but not the ability anymore.

On my list to get a variant of some form in the near future.

I know the feeling.

When I was a kid the road wasn’t much bigger than one lane. I’m sure it looks much different now.
