It's a great nuance. I love it. Quirky

It is quirky.

It’s a leftover rule from a predecessor game. They didn’t realize how incompatible it was with the modern form of the game until catchers started dropping third strikes on purpose to turn 2-4-3 double plays. But instead of scrapping it like they did with a bunch of other obsolete rules, they inexplicably decided to keep it in and just make it inapplicable if first base was occupied with less than 2 outs.

So in short, it’s this little piece of a different game that managed to survive while everything else around it changed. So I can understand why some find it a charming little eccentricity, but it ain’t for me.

Oh. I was thinking statistically. Statistically, isn't Beam very near if not the top this season?
Oh, yeah...
8-0
1.50 era
Right around 50 strikeouts in 50 innings
Opp batting like .120 off him

If Beam continues on same pace, he may be college player of the year...he is, at this point, imo.

However, Tidwell is still the best pitcher in college baseball, imo.

Well, they did a headband… sort of

Notes -

I was reading an article the other day, I think from a Kentucky sports writer, and he was touting the fact that Kentucky only gave up 5 plays last year that gained over 40 yards. According to CFBstats they actually gave up 6. Georgia gave up 12 and so did we. Anyway, the thing that I thought was worth noting is that of the 5 or 6 40+ yard plays that the Kentucky defense gave up last year, 3 of them were to us. They only gave up 2 plays over 50 yards, both to us. It probably makes a big difference if you play against an offense that can make those kinds of plays. Kentucky mostly doesn't. jmo.

One of the things Heupel & Co. have said we need to improve on this year is our short yardage situations. We were middle of the conference last year in our short yardage game but we were 2nd behind Georgia in the percentage of our plays that went for 7+ yards and 10+yards.

Addison Nichols said in his spring interview that in high school he and his offensive line were able to get push and he knew it would be tougher in the SEC but he still thought they would be able to get some push. He said it was an eye opener when he discovered that you couldn’t get any push. He seems like a really good kid with huge upside and may be our top candidate right now to take over for Cooper when the time comes. jmo.

On Tuesday upcoming it is expected that Munford, Alabama Safety Sylvester Smith will be joining our 2023 class of commitments. I was trying to find some evaluations on him but not a lot seems to have been written. He’s a tremendous athlete, can play on both sides of the ball, said to have elite lateral quickness and change of direction, big hitter, high football IQ, studies a lot of film, trains with a former NFL DB 3+ times per week. It is said his natural ball skills allow him to routinely win one-on-one situations with receivers. He had an ankle injury some time back but appears to have recovered. I didn’t find a 100 meter time but his 200 meter time is 22:30. For reference De’Shawn Rucker’s 200 meter time is 22:64 with 10:76 in the 100. Evan Berry was at 22:45 in the 200 and 10:73 in the 100.

The growth in Smith's game is inevitable, but before he can focus on what is next, he has to return to his old form before applying his fierce work ethic towards making further strides. Smith is coming off an ankle injury that should have sidelined him for the duration of his junior season, only it didn't because he would not let it. The Sylvester Smith that you see on film from last year, albeit as productive as he was, is not the Sylvester Smith that he knows he can be.

"I come off my sophomore season leading offense and defense," Smith said of where he wants to see his game grow. "I had ten interceptions, had 1,500 rushing yards; I broke records that year. I actually picked up a couple of offers to play running back, but I just like seeing the ball in the air, going to get it, and hitting people with the ball. The second game, first play of the game, I basically had a season-ending injury with a medial sprain to my left ankle and tore some ligaments. We had tight games, like region games, back-to-back-to-back, and really there was no one to come up and fill my spot, so I had to play and lead the team the best I could. I just had to set all of that personal stuff aside, and I was playing with my ankle as swollen as a softball. Really now, it is about getting back to the level I was, then getting past it. I want to separate from everyone else. I am getting ready to commit, and separating from everyone else is going to be my focus after. I have always been taught you have to find something good in the bad, and I was able to learn to lead my team more mentally than physically during that time."

When Smith announces his college decision on April 26th, the hats on the table at Munford High School will evidence how highly regarded he is. Kirby Smart calls him routinely. LSU staffs, new and old, have both extended offers and pursued heavily, while Tennessee has reiterated time and again the opportunity they have for him in their depleted secondary. Other schools like Auburn and Florida, both of which have some type of longstanding relationship with him, are sure to kick the tires one more time to see if they can slow his process. But, for now, Smith has offered insight into his game and what he brings to one of these schools; in a couple of more weeks, he will offer up what is next and why it is.

As noted, it is expected that he will be a Tennessee Vol. jmo.
