The DeSantis containment thread -- all things DeSantis go here

There’s no crying in politics 😂
If you are looking for a non contact sport, this ain’t the place. Disney waded into the political Thunderdome. No way they get to cry „hands off“ after they decided to play the game.

No offense, but the government is not supposed to threaten it's citizens. Not sure why you keep on defending this.

You poor deluded soul to believe that you statement is a reflection of reality. Your boy trump sure expected loyalty and obedience from Sessions and Barr and publicly ridiculed them for failing to do his bidding.

So Sessions and Barr exhibited independence from the executive branch just as OrangeTsar said they should and he's deluded?

Explain the logic behind your statement.

Only at the point where Trump was out did Barr do that. And only at the point where what was being requested was beyond dumb.

I think Barr was far more independent than you give him credit. Just because he did some things Trump agreed with does not make Barr, nor Trump, wrong about them. Just because the left did not like it does not make it wrong. Just because Trump did not like what Sessions and Barr did at times did not make them wrong. Just because you may not have liked what Barr did does not make him wrong.

OT pointed out the AG should act independently from the executive of the government. It appears the two you used as an example did so by your own argument! Calling someone deluded when your subsequent argument seems to validate their statement is, what is the word I'm looking for here...anyone?

You saying they were independent does not make it so and Trump fired one for not giving him the loyalty. Is that really the way it is supposed to work? We expect independence but their job security depends on loyalty.

I agree that those are not the reasons that Barr’s independence was called into question.

Yet it happens almost daily.

What I find interesting is how peoples attitude has changed. If this were Exxon I imagine the Disney defenders and the DeSantis defenders would be on opposite sides. Me, I think this is a PR stunt by DeSantis and probably a bad financial move for FL and the surrounding municipalities.

Mr. Biden also moved to mandate shots for health care workers, federal contractors and the vast majority of federal workers, who could face disciplinary measures if they refuse. - NYT

Buuuuuuut that's different. Threatening employers with 100 (or 500 can't remember the #) to force employees to be vaccinated was different too. So no hypocrisy on display at all.

I was not in favor of the mandates, but his motives were for public safety (however misguided) not to punish someone for opposing him.

Up to and including be fired. Sounds pretty much like a threat to me. My wife is a nurse and was threatened with termination if she did not get jabbed. She got a religious exemption, along with a bunch of others at her hospital, so did not get jabbed. In her case, she'd already had Covid in the first go-round, so the jabbing requirement made little sense.

The distinction here is that the mandate was applied uniformly where as DeSantis is targeting Disney for revenge for daring to have an opinion that opposed his.

I really want to like DeSantis, and would likely vote for him over a second Biden term - but he's got to stop this banana republic fight picking.

Has anyone even brought up the math book debacle?

Man, what are you arguing here? Is getting fired for not being blindly loyal not a sign of independence? I have not made the statement they were independent, I'm simply pointing out that your logic for calling someone else delusional is severely, and I mean severely, flawed. Dear Lord, look at your first sentence here.

We'll just take Sessions for the moment: if Sessions was fired for not being blindly loyal to Trump, is that not a significant indication that Sessions acted independently of the executive? Because if it is not, I'm at a loss for what constitutes a display of independence and maybe you can enlighten all of us. All OrangeTsar said was is that the AG should act independent of the executive and got labeled delusional. Geez.

"But, but Trump!"

The mandate was not applied uniformly. If it was there wouldn't have been employee limits or specific industries targeted.

That's why they built in a one year delay. The rest of the GOP in the Legislature is hoping that Knucklehead Governor and Woke Disney figure out a way to settle their purported differences before it actually matters.

And I say purported because absolutely NOTHING has changed as to the wisdom of the special taxing district Disney operates under. Its pure retaliation and beating a dead dog (or mouse) by Knucklehead.

Doesn't the bill removed all or most of the special districts in FL not just Disney?

Uniformly in the sense that no specific business was targeted as revenge. Using mask mandates as whatabout to Desantis looking for revenge against Disney is distinctly different.

nice shuffle step. The vaccine mandates absolutely had a punitive angle and was targeted, maybe not as revenge but as a control mechanism so virtually the same. In either case both the vaccine mandates and DeSantis’ proposed action against Disney are examples of govt tyranny.

I don't know, does it? State legislators have come out and overtly stated that tjis is a result of Disney weighing in.

I remember when some folks used to get mad about government targeting specific businesses. I guess that ship has sailed.

Yea it targets all 1844 special districts and allows them to even reapply later

I am not sure that is correct. Some news reports state that it will affect only a small number, 5 of the 1844.

But, its a bill in progress so maybe it will pretend to apply to all. And I say "pretend" because having worked at the Florida Capitol for a number of years, I know that Florida requires general laws -- that is you cannot fashion a bill in such a way as to seem to be a blanket provision, but draw it up to narrowly target someone. So for example you cannot carve out a tax exemption for all car businesses with a lot of x size, in business since 1973, and with purple in their advertising signs and have that obviously mean to apply to one car business.

Of note per the above, one district not affected by the bill is The Villages. That is about as Republican a stronghold as you can imagine.

I was wrong is looks like targeting 6 of them...i think they need to do all or none.. while not a fan of Disney, haven't been for a while. Not a fan of picking and choosing for a disagreement

It is largely Kabuki Theater and is about DeSantis' 2024 bid for the WH. The GOP Legislature of course wants to do DeSantis a solid, but they are not so foolish as to not also think about how powerful and monied an interest they are taking on with Disney. So, they built in a one year window into the bill before it really goes into effect.

DeSantis gets on Fox, gets to bash wokism and leftist corporations from California, all the usual suspects... and then it quietly gets worked out and no one pays attention 10 months from now.

I think it will have to pass locally to have any binding effect. I seriously doubt the residents of the affected area will green light this.
