UT is serious about NIL. It helps to have powerful alums like Randy Boyd and Bill Haslam navigate political backchannels to keep TN an NIL-friendly state.
TN always planned on amending the original NIL bill that took effect in January. Amending specific sections gives UT more flexibility and leverage, ensuring that UT retains a recruiting advantage to the full extent of state law.
Other states are making similar amendments to remain competitive. Since schools operate under different state laws, states are trying to level the playing field for their in-state schools. UT was ahead of the pack in forming a collective and creating multiple funding streams. The next step is to leverage the interaction to best advantage, giving UTAD a more hands-on role in aligning SAs with opportunities and guiding them through the NIL process.
Opening communication channels will give the university more control over the timing and verbiage of deals and maintain tight compliance with guidelines and state law so SAs-- and UT-- aren't put in unfavorable situations.
