I’m still looking at our performance last year vs unranked and ranked teams. As previously noted all 130 FBS teams played unranked opponents but only 117 FBS teams played an opponent that was ranked in the AP top 25 at the end of the year.
The big 3 on our schedule every year are Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. This is how we’ve fared over the past 4 seasons.
Earlier I posted a table showing the number of defensive plays/game that have been typical of Heupel’s teams. This table breaks out last year’s number of plays on average for both our offense and defense against unranked and ranked opponents. Our offense had more plays on average than our defense against the 8 unranked opponents and the reverse happened against our 5 ranked opponents.
Since a lot of the focus this spring has been on our 3rd down defense and short yardage situations for our offense, I’ve broke out 3rd down conversion percentages for both units based on unranked and ranked opponents. We were 15th best in the nation on 3rd down defense against the 8 unranked teams but fell to #106 in conversion % allowed against the 5 ranked teams.
The staff has said we need a solid 4-man pass rush which I think we'll have this year. I mis-wrote in an earlier post when I said a writer reported that out of 36 converted 3rd downs on opponent's scoring drives 33 of those were converted via a pass. The point was only 3 converted 3rd downs were by a running back but 24 of the conversions were via the pass, 7 were because we lost containment on the QB (scrambled) and 2 were because of penalties. We're working on this so I think we'll be better, and much of this improvement has to come against our better opponents. jmo.
We are said to be working toward having an aggressive defense and in fact set a school record last year for TFLs. This table shows how we did against our 2 groups of opponents. It also shows that our offensive line need to significantly improve - which Heupel has said is a big emphasis this spring.
I redid my offensive and defensive tables to make sure all the units were apples to apples and those tables suggest that we mostly ran the ball against unranked teams and relied more on the pass against ranked teams. On defense both unranked and ranked teams alike hit us with a lot of passes. I think it’s probably worth keeping in mind that we may have faced an unusually high number of pass-happy offenses last year. jmo.
One note - Combined, Hooker had the 3rd highest passer rating in the nation owing to some others who had significant struggles against their ranked competition. Hendon was mostly more consistent regardless of the level of competition.
Finally, tempo is a key element to our offense so I wanted to see how we measured up to our opponents and to the rest of the conference. I did look at tempo vs unranked and ranked and there wasn’t a lot of difference. We were about 10 milliseconds faster against ranked opponents. Also, I’ve included Notre Dame and Louisiana because Kelly and Napier are on our schedule this year and I assume they’ll mostly continue to do what they’ve done in the past. jmo.
No one is faster on offense that we are.
