Or perhaps 2018 where an injury forced Blaine Gabbert to start the last three games, including the last game of the season against the Colts (though TEN won the two games he played in the weeks leading up to it 17-0 vs the Giants and 25-16 vs Washington)?

Seems they followed the rule. I'm not following. They interviewed Mularkey. They liked him and told him they planned to hire him. Before they could, they had to finish the interview process.

They hired the guy they wanted, albeit the wrong guy. Having/being forced to interview anyone else is ridiculous anyway.

The teams did not violate the Rule but the plaintiffs will attemp to show a pattern of hiring practices that shows bias. Their case is proving the Rooney Rule is a joke and they are subject to damages for having their time wasted, misled, etc. And NFL will settle for a sizable payment to them.

The nfl shouldn’t. The rule is a joke, 100%. But that doesn’t show hiring bias.

Their defense is practically destroyed when you tell someone “you’re hired but we’re interviewing 2 minority candidates cause we have to”.

I’m not arguing with you the rule is stupid but the NFL incorporated the rule themselves. When any organization violates their own policies, they are subject to legal action. If you’re not going to adhere by the rule, don’t put it in place.

The NFL and some teams are being sued. Their defense is the Rooney Rule but when it is discovered these were not fair & legitimate interviews then they can be found to violate their own hiring policies.

Guys, I’m not a supporter for either side but when a team decides and commits to a coach hire before any minority candidates are interviewed, it’s really not complying with the intent of their (nFL) policy. I suspect these coaches and any who joins in, will receive a hefty payment from the NFL & guilty teams will be fined.

But after a committment to hire another, non-minority, coach had already been decided and made making the interview a complete fraud. Listen, forget I said anything and be totally shocked with the NFL settles this thing out of court.....They have no leg to stand on.

You’re confusing two different they’s in your explanation.

Does a team have to imply with the intent or the letter of the law? Poor laws are not the problem of the team. In terms of the nfl, they’ve done what they can on their end. All rules have unintended consequences.

What more could the nfl have done here? There’s no case here

This is what I have been wondering as well. You can't just tack on "Well, you have to mean it!" at the end. It's nearly impossible to police intent.
