Most bets are -110. So if you bet 100, you win 90. That 10 is the juice aka house edge. Not everyone hunts for those even money plays.
I've bet on a hundred or so games against the spread, and every time I won, I got exactly double the money. Clearly I've been doing it wrong. Your explanation definitely makes sense though.
 
Looking at gump’s bracket. I don’t see how they make it past the round of 32. Has to play either Rutgers or Notre Dame and then if they win they get Texas Tech in the round of 32 Lol
