The argument I've heard is that they think a larger base will cut down on injuries which makes sense. You give a runner 20% more surface area and he's got a wider target and less opportunity for contact.I do not understand what is the plus for a larger base. Maybe to give umpires with failing eyesight some assistance? Won’t it still be 90 feet from home to front edge of 1B or is the distance measured to the middle of the bag? I guess first to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd get a bit closer so stolen bases increase? Someone please enlighten me.
That is reasonable if it protects pitchers covering 1B or first basemen coming down on high throws. But a runner sliding into 2B or 3B can be further out of the base path and still reach the bag.
