‘23 CA QB Nicholaus Iamaleava (Tennessee)

Wasn't the point at all. The point was paying multiple millions for a guy with a big chance of being a bust. It's a huge risk at the high school level.

Top 10 nationally ranked QBs actually have a pretty low bust percentage, I think you’d have to go back to 2014 to find a top 10 nationally ranked QB that was a complete bust who didn’t at least have one good season. (Jury still out on DJ at Clemson IMO)

Top 10 overall? Perhaps. 5* (10-30) plenty of recent examples.

Just wasted 5 minutes scrolling on 247 and outside of Trevor and Fields they’re all complete garbage.

Rivals.com - Rivals Camp Series L.A.: Predictions for five prospects

Friedman: Iamaleava has his pick of whichever school he wants to attend, but it seems like the SEC is getting more attention than the other teams involved in his recruitment. Tennessee is my pick for where he'll end up but keep an eye out for Alabama and Georgia, depending on how the rest of the quarterback dominoes fall. Oregon is in the conversation as well. The Ducks are trying to ramp up with new head coach Dan Lanning at the helm.

Shea Patterson threw for 3k yards and 23/8 as a senior
Jacob Eason threw for 3100 yards and 23/8 as a senior
Lawrence was great
Fields was great
Bryce Young - heisman winner, guess he’s “complete garbage”
DJ - bad year, but still time to grow
Quinn Ewers - hasn’t played yet but by all accounts seems to be a stud
Caleb Williams - great in limited time at OU this year.

Who is “complete garbage” on that list? Shea and Eason weren’t world beaters but both ended up being solid contributors at some point in their career.

It's even worse than that. Nobody on Rivals wanted him a 5*...except one...who was very vocal about going to bat for HB and yelled from the mountaintop how he was the only guy that saw the specialness in him...a very special guy that singlehandedly pushed him in....

I present to you, Spoons Farrell.
Sooo... he WAS a 5* . QED.

Slightly outside the top 10 national you get into such notables as Hunter Johnson, JT Daniels, Blake Barnett. They were all within the top 2 or 3 pro style QBs. For reference, Nico is 4th.

Second or third round NFL draft money for Hunter Johnson? Yikes.

It’s fairly obvious we are not going to agree on this. I obviously think Nico is worth the risk and would be happy if the money I donated to Spyre, and lots of other people’s money, went to Nico.

you don’t think it’s worth the risk. Agree to disagree.

Didn't say that, and really don't believe that. I'm just saying that when an NFL team pays that same kind of money, they know what they are getting. As long as those dropping that kind of money understand it's a lottery ticket, it'll be fine. After a handful of inevitable busts they may not be as willing.

Bust happen in the NFL all the time. They’re also investing money with no guarantee.

Not the same. NFL teams are both the investor and beneficiary. That is the cost of doing business. Schools are the primary beneficiary, but they are not the investor. The investors are businesses that may struggle to justify it when they can’t quantify ROI, or fans who may not care, until they get mad at the coach for not playing their guy, and refuse to contribute. The disconnect between investor and beneficiary has the makings of a fickle relationship. That’s never true in the NFL draft process.

Our opinions are irrelevant; the market will do what it does. Fans are fanatical. That includes doing completely irrational things. Rich people typically don't stay rich by being stupid with money though. Will be really interesting to see what the college market does over time. Higher than NFL draft? Or does it tone down over time, and come in a bit under the NFL? We'll see.

Tua, Sam Howell, Matt Corral, Davis Mills, Jake Fromm, Kellen Mond, Bryce Young, CJ Stroud

That’s are some very good to elite level QBs.

Granted I did top 10 QBs and from 247. Idk if you were using a different service or maybe talking top ten players in the nation

The question has never been whether money should be spent, the question is how long people will be willing to spend NFL money with much less to go on. These nameless, faceless 'boosters' aren't throwing around 8 figures without expectations, and if those expectations aren't met, will they continue to do so. This isn't hard.

I'm failing to see the problem. When you say they won't continue to spend 8 figures if expectations aren't meet, why is that bad? If a Dillion Brooks gets paid to come here and then doesn't perform, should they not receive less money?

What am I missing?

I'd throw in guys like Hunter Johnson, Blake Barnett, Kyle Allen, JT Daniels, DTR, Rattler, and Bo Nix as examples of 5 stars who really didn't accomplish anything noteworthy in college (within the 2014 date range you gave). Including the guys from your list (and only the ones that are draft eligible) 2 have been first round picks. Another guy who was a 5 star, Davis Mills, was a 3rd round pick, which is low for a QB since teams reach so hard for anyone good.

But to your point, a 5 star QB, who is now being discussed in the 7 to 8 figure range, would be considered a "bust" by most if they came in and had the careers that the majority of these guys had.
